If someone makes the choice to leave the iPhone, what is the best thing you would look for in terms of professionalism and usability? The one thing that always scared me about leaving iPhone is because of the rich ecosystem, but now I don't really see that as much of an issue anymore because most everyone I know now has Android phones. I mean, there's that Samsung Galaxy that has a nicer screen, it's bigger and it's HD. Is BB10 a contender?

I've been impressed with some of the things Google has been coming out with, they have innovative features in their new phones and functionality through the roof and even their apps have gotten better especially with Google now and Google Maps which is pretty perfect imo.

So, what would I be looking at in terms of treading the water into a new ecosystem? Should I just make a list of all the apps I have and see how they transfer over into the new phone.

This is my first time at this, because I do not want to be hit with iOS7.

Please help?

The App situation is pretty similar at this point. Apple may have an edge in polish for some of the apps but most of the good ones are the same. Android has an edge in the utilities department.

The nice thing about android is that it conforms to you. If you want it to look professional, it can look professional. If you like the care bears and my little pony, it can look like that. The possibilities are quite honestly endless. And gone are the days of confusion. I can just as easily recommend an HTC or Galaxy device as I can an iPhone 5. I will say that apple has dominance in the Tablet market though.

As for professional looking devices. You've got:

Sony Xperia Z
HTC One
Nexus 4

All those have superb build quality and look great. If you don't mind plastic you could get a black Galaxy S4.

BB10 is also a viable option but app selection is limited (it is expanding however) unless you don't mind sideloading apps.

From talking to the droiders I know they all say the htc one is the best droid handset available at the moment.

I'd also say the HTC One. Android definitely has the next best app ecosystem after iOS. However, most new apps hit iOS first then Google Play quite awhile later. That may change someday.

I liked the Z10 my friend has, but there is little app support for it.

I'd wait to see what your actual experience with iOS7 is before you switch. It seems like a knee jerk reaction to me.

What does "professionalism" mean to you? The word is meaningless in the context you've used. Do you just mean appearance-wise? If that's the case then you need to clarify what a "professional" phone looks like to you since it's such a subjective matter. Professionals use a wide variety of phones.

If it meets your needs/wants -- which you haven't provided.

That's a good start. Like any other part of the device selection process you need to have a good understanding of your needs/wants and then find solutions that fit versus looking at everything out there. It's no different from shopping for anything else.

We can't help unless you help us to help you. You need to give us a lot more info regarding what you're looking for. Otherwise, read up and look into what sounds like is a good fit for you.

Best is always highly subjective. You can't poll others to determine which device is best for you. You compare your needs/wants to the options out there.

Buil quiality is superb, camera is great, screen is fantastic plus i get to have wifi/bluetooth/light/airplane mode toggles in my notification center just by installing one simple app from the Play store. You have to install an app?
My old HTC phones would just let me put a widget on to do all of that. And my wifes GS3 lets you do all that just by swiping down from the top of the screen

The only phone that really impresses me all around is the Galaxy Note 2. The only reason I really got rid of it was because te display in sunlight. I'm waiting for the note 3 and my 5yr reign of iPhones is over most likely.

At until they release a 5" phone..

Depends on the phone. On my nexus 4 I downloaded a widget called power toggles.

Just as with the early days of personal computing:

1) decide what apps and utilities you can't do without.
2) choose the OS that best supports those apps
3) -THEN- choose the hardware that matches the OS

Right now, I'd still give iOS the edge for portable gaming from the bigger name publishing houses. It's a narrow lead, and games that are available for both platforms often look better on Android thanks to bigger screens and processors. But iOS remains the ecosystem of choice for many developers.

If you follow rules 1-3 and choose iOS your handset choices are limited to current-gen or last-gen. If you choose Android, dozens of choices.

Apps should be your primary focus. If not, you may as well choose a dumb-phone.

I moved from iPhone 5 to HTC One and haven't looked back. The only thing I miss is iMessage communication with my iPhone friends and the iPhone's better Exchange folder support in the default e-mail client. Other than that the HTC One is an awesome device. The camera and stereo speakers are truly outstanding.

The carrier he's on also makes a difference. In the US T-Mobile has a feature called wifi calling that's fully integrated into their network and allows calls to be made over wifi if you don't get a good indoor signal.

However, the feature is not available on iPhone nor any Galaxy Nexus devices.
So a SGS4 or HTC One would be better for those users.

To the OP do what I did, go to a store and play around with the phones I still have an iPhone but I love my Galaxy Note 2.

Can't wait for the Galaxy Note 3

For me personally Android has far more problems and limitations than I'm prepared to put up with. I have a Sansung Galaxy S and Note 2 but they're both not able to meet my needs

There are just two areas that I really really wish to see changed with iPhone: bigger screen and Swype keyboards.

Quite a few, but the main ones are as follows:

1) I have lots of music videos and want to be able to play them in the background while doing other things with the phone (no pop up video please), and also with the phone completely switched off. This can't be done with Android as far as I know.

2) I want to create playlists that contains both music and music videos. This again could not be done.

3) I want to be able to start/pause/skip/go back in music/video playing while the playing in in the background or when the phone is switched off. With iPhone, we can jailbreak it and install Activator to perform such functions. With Android, this can't be done. I listen to music just before going to sleep every night, and do not want to turn on the bright screen to perform these task. Instead I want to just put my fingers on the hardware buttons that perform these task and to perform them without having to open my eyes.

If you know of ways to meet the above needs, please let me know because I love to use phones with much bigger screens and I love Swype/TouchPal keyboards that my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 offers. Thanks.
