For the past 2 years must of my mobile work has been done with an iPad Pro (10.5") and Apple keyboard. Now that I have an M1 Air I hardly use the iPad.

Mostly due to the fact that I know over time each iPad keyboard takes punishment on the road and gives up the ghost after about a year. (I was on keyboard number 3)

Anyone doing the same?

I stopped using my Magic Keyboard long before I got my M1.

I just like using my iPad as a tablet, so keep it in the Folio.

My Magic Keyboard is boxed up, like new. I may go back to it, but for now I just consider it a waste of 300 quid.

In March of 2020 I had bought a 12.9" iPad Pro for $999 and then later on a Magic Keyboard for it for $350. So I had basically spent almost $1400 to buy an iPad the size of a Macbook screen and a keyboard/mouse accessory that basically turned it into a laptop. I consider myself a power user of the iPad Pro, so I thought nothing of doing this at the time, as I never planned on going back to the Mac full time again.

Then M1 Macs launched, and I really had to do some soul searching. Because for $999, I could now get a Macbook Air for $999 that was thinner, lighter, had way better battery life, and way more power than my iPad Pro. No, it doesn't have a touch screen, but because I had moved up to the 12.9 and gotten the Magic Keyboard, I was barely ever using the iPad Pro's touch screen anymore. I was using my iPad Pro mostly like a laptop, because I think all along, that's really what I needed it to be most of the time.

I shrugged it off initially when the M1s came out, but eventually the reviews and benchmarks made it pretty obvious that there was no reason for me to have this crazy expensive iPad setup anymore when I could have the M1 Macbook Air. The rest, as they say, is history. iPad and keyboard went up on Swappa, M1 Macbook Air is now my daily driver for personal use.

I’m still in the denial stage with my iPad Air 3 and ASK. I force myself to use the iPad, just because I don’t want to make it seem like I can just use my M1 MBP for everything - for example, I can take it to bed... but without the ASK.

Like you, I sold my 12.9 iPad and keyboard. It was great for some things, but also limiting and a little awkward to use while on my lap—a little too top heavy. In addition, I find myself reaching for the M1 much more than I did with the IPP/keyboard. No regrets.

Not here. I am thrilled with my MBA but still find my 11" iPad Pro with MK more portable and use it just as much as I did before the MBA. In particular I do all my book reading in Books on the iPad. Books on the MBA just doesn't work anywhere near as well for me, especially in bed.

next iPad pro and the reverse question will be asked LOL
Exactly. People always want their latest. I personally sold my iPad because I couldn’t justify having a tablet if I have the same thing basically in my laptop. If the iPad could run the full macOS, that may be a different thing.

Gotta be in it to win it
An m1 mac, in fact any laptop will not replace my ipad. Especially when reading in bed or watching tv or consuming other content. Ipad has such a good form factor with a decent lasting battery and can connect either b/t headphones or earpods and/or regular headphones via the headphone jack.

To be honest, I think it's been a month since I last used the M1 MacBook. Now that I'm no longer quarantining in the bedroom, I'm back to using desktops for work and iPad for leisure.

For the week and a half I had my M1 Air, I used my old iPP as a Sidecar display. But yeah, I still really like using a touchscreen so my iPP is still used.

iPad still more enjoyable and versatile to use. Supports pencil, me laying in bed, slouching on couch, portrait mode typing, and serious keyboard usage when needed. M1 doesn’t have enough features. I mean I like it, but the form factor is limiting.

iPad and laptop still fulfill two different roles for me, although an iPad with a keyboard crosses over into both.

iPad is definitely more convenient for many "consumption" tasks, particularly when away from a desk.

  • For use on the couch or in bed,
  • in the kitchen or bathroom (smaller footprint and far less likelihood of water damage if supported on a stand/case)
  • on public transport, including aircraft (can't use a laptop during takeoff/landing but tablet is OK)
  • In the street, when looking for information / maps (probably less tempting to possible thieves as well and the Apple brand can be hidden in a case)
  • and pretty much anywhere else where space is limited and you don't have a desk and need to type much.
Laptop is better for:
  • "computing" tasks that require using full OS and desktop software, extensive file handling, or lots of text work (typing, copy & paste).
  • For connecting to external devices (storage, displays, interfaces)
  • When higher performance and storage capacities are required.
An iPad with keyboard (& better with touch pad) goes part of the way to being a useful productivity tool, but iOS apps are still "lightweight" compared to their desktop counterparts. Lots of desktop OS & software features are missing.

It's pretty much divided between "work = laptop" (+ external screen(s) ) and "leisure / on-the-move = iPad"

Definitely. My 12.9" iPad Pro with the "Magic"ally Heavy ass keyboard is heavier than my Macbook Air! Makes no sense really.

Only thing missing in the Air by the stubborn Apple design team is 4G (or 5G). If iPads can have them, why not Macs?

The main thing different about an M1 Air (compared to an Intel Air), which might cause usage of iPad to drop, is the ability to run iOS apps on the M1 Air.....interesting that no one who has stopped using their iPad has mentioned this!

How well do you find iOS apps work in practice? I haven't really explored this in-depth with my M1 Mini.

Not tried it properly. Don't have a need so far as I still use my iPad a lot. At the start I believe there was an issue with the apps only using the same screen size as the iOS device but think this was changed in an early macOS 11 update.

i’ve taken the keyboard out.
for the last two years, i preferred the ipad pro plus keyboard folio as the preferred device over a mbp.
now that the mba is proving to equally good or rather better, i have finally got around to using the ipad in its originally intended mode ?

the usage split is now 40:60 vs around 80:20 earlier (ipad:laptop)

as for ipad apps on m1, i have a few where the intel app is slow/ bloated (hikvision ivms , home assistant) but these are mostly side usage apps.
all primary apps are universal or intel

That's a great observation and for me the answer is definitely "yes".
