Check this out

Logical in that it hit the battery compartment which is mostly empty but it could easily have exploded!.

We have an office in Brazil and evidently notebook muggings are a big thing down there. When a teammate of mine heads down to our Brazil office he carries his notebook in a backpack that does not look like a notebook backpack so as not to attract any attention.

It looks like the MacBook in the picture might have saved someone's life.

I remember a Toughbook taking a bullet for a soldier in Iraq and stopped working. People on digg commented these words "I'd like to see a Mac do that". and the mac still works!

posting this on digg.
edit: someone already did! Digg it for those who are diggers!

A round fired from a rifle and a pistol are so different in power it is not even a fair comparison.

Discounting the fact that the round which hit the toughbook is probably fired from an higher calibre AK, even a 5.56mm round from a M16 can *easily* slice through the entire Macbook Pro like it is not even there.

Aluminum is a really soft metal you know.

According to The Inquirer, bullet experts had responded saying that the toughbook was hit from a low calibre bullet at a distance. I agree. Just by looking at the toughbook's entrance wound...a 5.56 AK round would have ripped that thing open (and produced a much larger point of entry). No doubt resulting in an exit hole on the backside.

I am assuming a mugging is much closer. Dont underestimate a pistol. a glock 9mm has enough stopping power. I highly doubt those muggers were using .22 pistols. At least 9mm.

at least the MBP works. The bullet in the toughbook got lodged in the keyboard probably crushing the motherboard.

Also, the angle of the bullet has the MBP at an advantage compared to the Toughbook. No doubt if it were hit at a perpendicular angle it would've went straight through, but instead it was hit at probably the strongest part of the MBP. Despite aluminum being soft, the malleable characteristics undoubtedly absorbed much of the energy of the bullet. Think of it as the "crush" zone found on every car.

I found this comment particularly hilarious:

With its sudden motion sensor, the Macbook probably "knew" it was getting shot.

If the picture is real, that must mean that the bullet was stopped by the battery. Any further, and it would have destroyed the RAM modules. For the Toughbook as mentioned, based on the flexing of the keyboard, the bullet must of shattered the motherboard. But on the in line with the trackpad area in the middle of the MacBook Pro, the RAM slots aren't until the spacebar and the motherboard doesn't start until like the J or the U key in that area.

Unbelievable, first MR then Digg then Wired and now Engadget. Didn't think it was really that big a story. Oh well...
