I tried installing Windows XP Profession on my macbook, and what I think happened was that the battery died when XP was being installed. Now I get the aforementioned screen and can't get any further even after taking out the Windows CD. When I re-inserted the CD, there was no promt of any sort to press something. What should I do?

The NTLDR message actually means that your boot.ini file is missing or points to the wrong location. If you boot off the XP CD again (hold down the option key at startup) then hit "R" for repair when you get to the install options screen.
