I have a backed up copy of Open Office and several spreadsheets with forumlas and numbers in them from a previous mac. Can I transfer over just the spreadsheets themselves from the external hard drive and they will work in the Numbers App on the new mac.

Saying the spreadsheets are in Open Office format? If so, Numbers cannot open those. Will need one of the ODF tools (Open/Libre/Neo/etc Office).

ADD: and Google Docs can handle ODF formats (their own document type was originally based off ODF).

Just to add a little more, here's the formats Numbers can open:

Formats you can open in Numbers

You can open these file formats in Numbers on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and online at iCloud.com:
  • All Numbers versions
  • Microsoft Excel: Office Open XML (.xlsx) and Office 97 or later (.xls)
  • Comma Separated Values (.csv)
  • Tab-delimited or fixed-width text files

Although I just created a simple OpenOffice spreadsheet with a couple of formulas and saved as Excel 5.0 XLS (which is not the version mentioned above), and when trying to open in Numbers, got the message that it's an unsupported version. No surprise but thought I'd try. Maybe XML will fare better but I'm not going to test it since it requires installation of Java runtime.
