Hello everyone.
I’ve been playing with the numbers app for a while and I was looking to make a spreadsheet that tracks the value of silver and gold based upon spot price. The problem I’ve run into is that I can only seem to get it to track the futures prices for silver and gold, which really aren’t useful metrics.

Has anyone figured out if there is a way to pull a commodities spot price in numbers? It seems like it’d be pretty easy to scrape that info using excel, but I’d like to use numbers if it’s possible here.

I think Numbers pulls from the same data source as the Stocks app, if that helps at all.

That said, I haven't found gold spot prices in Stocks either, just futures prices as you say.

To my knowledge, it should work for silver if i put in =CURRENCY(“XAG”,”USD”) but it spits out a random number at about $15.00, which is clearly less than spot price. In fact, =CURRENCY(“XAG”,”USD”,1) even spits out its name as being “SILVER 1 OZ 999 NY”. It’s incredibly frustrating as I’m beginning to believe numbers has some kind of source error that applies only to silver and gold spot prices.

Interesting. Good to know. Unfortunately, like you said, it doesn't seem to work for XAG or XAU but seems to work for BTC. Wondering if Apple is trying to tell us something.

Yeah, that’s odd that it works for bitcoin but not silver and gold.

Oddly enough, several reputable gold and silver retailers are now selling gold for bitcoin (albeit at significant premiums above dollar values to account for the crazy volatility of bitcoin).

Gold and silver are not currencies. They are commodities.

Yahoo Finance -- the data source for Apple's Stocks app and Numbers -- does not provide spot pricing for commodities.

Actually, it did. In fact, the symbol for silver XAG and symbol for gold XAU spot prices are still supported in numbers using the formula I provided above. The problem appears to be that Yahoo discontinued support for it in 2018 and it permanently reports the spot price as being $15.22.

Apple has simply failed to provide a new source for that data.

Three years later, Apple still hasn’t fixed this dead end link to yahoo. This is one of those things that makes Apple’s business suite not competitive with Microsoft office. Apple just doesn’t care as much about this and it’s not as important for their bottom line.e
