Nvidia 7800 GT now shipping in 5-7 days

Anyone notice that Apple has changed the shipping dates for this card from 6-8 weeks to 5-7 business days for Quad systems and 2-3 business days for dual-core powermacs? Of course this probably means nothing considering the way Apple does business, but i'm a bit mad because I just bought a quad with the Nvidia 6600 because I couldn't be poised to wait 6-8 weeks. My Quad shipped today.

I called tech support to see if the card will be available in the future as a kit and got nothing in return. Plus the card doesn't appear to be for sale yet on the Apple store.

These cards should become available shortly as options.

The 6600 that is the default video card in the Quad seems quite good. Although that does depend on what you want to use the card for.

My suggestion is to wait to see if you really need the 7800. And also see what other video options for the dual core PowerMac systems appear over the next month or so.

I noticed the change in shipping times as well. However going from 6-8 weeks down to 5-7 business days is a big jump. I have a Quad core with the 7800GT option on order right now as a replacement for my leaking Dual 2.5 with 6800GT. I will have to call AppleCare or email them to check the status of my replacement machine.

The 7800GT is a definite must though if you are already spending the money for a quad core machine. The Geforce 6600 is a joke of a card for a $3300 machine. Remember Apple uses the 6600LE and the Regular 6600 standard in it's newest powermacs and not the 6600GT which is a true mid-range "performance" Video card.

Remember the Radeon 9800 has been around for almost 3 years now since early 2003 and in almost all cases it can beat the Standard 6600 not to mention walloping a 6600LE(light edition) even more. In the PC world the 6600LE retails for as little as $85 and Standard 6600 for as little as $99.

I just hope that it will be offered in the future. From what the Apple tech said, the card will not be available as a CTO option in the future. So if you want the card to be installed, you will have to send it in to Apple or another authorized reseller who can have it built in.
