Nvidia CEO restates claims that failure rates low

Nvidia did their quarterly conference call earlier this week. During which, CEO Jen-Hsun "Can of whoop***" Huang, restated the original story of only a small number of GPUs being bad.

Now, can we PLEASE stop listening to Inquirer stories written by a guy who is known to exaggerate news sto make Nvidia look bad?



FYI, for those who don't know, spewing PR BS in a shareholder conference is illegal.

I still smell bs. Of course they'll deny it especially after filing the measely 200 million to the sec which won't even begin to cover the damage.

When a company is on the verge of bankrupt I would have done the same thing until the whole issue was over with.

Btw that toms hardware article has nothing to do with the nvidia gpus dying.
 
nVidia gpu failure is only on the older units, like a year or so. the newer units arent defective. thats what nvidia claimed in a report. they said they're working withthe pc vendors including apple (sorry for calling apple a pc) to fix the issue, they now run checks on the dies before they are shipped to be soldered onto the logic/mother board. so if i went out and bought a mbp, the nvidia gpu isnt a defect unit.
 
Saying that a small number of them are bad isn't the same as saying not that many will go bad. Semantically, he could be talking about chips that have already shown failure, rather than the GPU timebombs.

To be honest, it's a waiting game to see how the distribution turns out. I can imagine off record invidividual companies are shouting blue murder about this, and seeing what they can do.

I think that the gpu from late June to now manufactured might not be defective but before late June (before the official sec filing) those penryns will still be defective.

Also people buying the 2.4ghz mbp even now are having CPU issues, so no one is 100% sure what's going on.

Everything they print that's right is common knowledge that all the tech blogs print. Everything they print by themselves is entertainment and nothing more.

Also you sold your computer (again) and bought another one (again)? Jokes. Seems [more] painfully obvious that you have absolutely no use for 8 cores and 16GB of RAM. Enjoy your macbook and your seemingly infinite supply of money!

I'm fairly certain I have a 20-bedroom palace with my very own World Domination Datacenter but I seem to have to come back to this 2-bedroom dump with a mere ten or so computers in it for some reason, including three Pros with non-imaginary specs which I haven't yet sold. I have however sold my five Blue Genes to make way for a maxed-out Commodore 64. Thank god for craigslist, another evil mastermind bought them.

I think my problem with this whole thing is how it was handled. First the analysts were drip-fed information that has turned out to be the skittering edge of a lie, then the manufacturers come out with fixes that aren't - they were basically ass band-aids. If there's no problem with the chips, there's no need to wind up the fans. We'll see. I have a number of Sony's with 8400M's which I intend to keep for a while, and of course the (also non-imaginary, and genuinely quite crap in other ways than the GPU) Macbook Pros.
 
I believe that it is a low number. Sure a lot of people on this forums have failed GPUs, but what would I do make a thread every day and say "My GPU didn't die today!" ?

Yea I jumped to the mac pro straight from the macbook pro but I forgot that I've done the mac pro deal already and always comes to the same reasons for selling it off again, lol.

One main reason is electricity bill, especially here in Texas the mac pro easily costs me around at least $50 a month or close to a $100 when I have it on constantly.

I d/l alot and rather have a notebook which barely uses up any watts and I can have it running 24/7.

Either way thank god for craigslist, another professional photographer bought my mac pro already setup for him to use and I broke even. =D

No more purchases for me, the macbook will do me just fine as I d/l mostly and just check email/web browsing just fine especially connected to the 23" ACD... Now I'm just waiting for the 4gb of ram to arrive.

Your logic seems very reasonable to me. ;)
Of course the official statements indicate the problems aren't massive, regardless of the actual scope. They may not even know the full extent themselves. :eek:

And if you actually had a use for a $3000 machine, you would be OK with a $100 electric bill. Or you could, you know, turn it off when it's not in use.

My electricity bill for this month came up to $975 and $825 last month before I got the mac pro. Either there is some sort of an electric leakage or not and I'm sure the mac pro contributed to the difference anyway. But for a machine that's just my "hobby" and its costing me close to $100 bucks a month doesnt seem reasonable to me anymore.

I just signed up for a 2 year fixed rate for a much better price per kWh. My usual bill should go down drastically from $800 to $400-$500 (usually in the summer its somewhere in $400-$500 a month especially in texas) but its still expensive as I live in a 2 story house.

Anyhow I usually leave things to dl 24/7 and when I had the mac pro I had to shut it off every night I go to sleep and lose time on dling the things I usually do or uploading.

The notebook just works so much better for what I do.

while you are right, it still happens all the time. heck, spewing BS is probably the least of most people's worries these days.

Time to contact a professional and find out the cause? ;)
 
Here's how I see it.

The idea that it only affects low numbers doesn't stack up. If there was a fundamental design flaw in manufacturing on all laptops up to whatever point in time it was flagged and steps taken to fix, then surely that manufacturing problem has to be apparent in all laptops produced up to that point, even if no symptoms are apparent immediately.

That gives me a greater doubt about how reliable my machine is than I should reasonably be expected to have as a consumer.

Given the high profile of this issue, that seeming contradiction and shadyness, Apple's complete silence on the issue, the fact that people have had multiple logic board swaps only to see the same issue, all adds up to a body of information that I feel should result in a swap in September for a machine without these chips. Or at the very least at whatever point a machine can be demonstrated to be displaying symptoms.

Except for the part where the 9M series will explode and kill us all like the 8M series. Being informed is fun.
