i have recently purchased an imac 24" with the 512mb nvidia graphics card and have dual booted the system with vista as i need both os x and vista. My question is, is the graphics card capable of directx 10 on vista?

Here is a snippet from the XFX video card website:

GeForce 8800 GS

KEY FEATURES

Full Microsoft® DirectX® 10 Support
World’s first DirectX 10 GPU with full Shader Model 4.0 support delivers
unparalleled levels of graphics realism and film-quality effects.

So it would appear the GeForce 8800 GS does support DirectX 10. I don't use Vista, but if Vista supports DirectX 10 you should be good to go.
