Nvidia hasn't forgotten us - GTX 970 & 980 drivers already in Yose Betas !!!

It's good to know that we have friends in San Jose.

Latest Beta Yosemite Web Drivers have GTX980 support !!!

You can literally order one from Newegg and use it.

We will be offering versions with better support when we have time to work on them.

With any luck we will have EFi figured out, at very least PCIE 2.0.

For now avoid GTX 970, as it isn't in the drivers yet.

It seems there is no OpenCl yet, and I have not been able to get any indication of CUDA yet as CUDA-Z doesn't function in Yosemite. (unless you use new 64bit Beta)

A short family visit has turned into a very different experience and I have had to rely on my partner back in LA to do testing. Will do more thorough report when I am able to return to LA.

EDIT : 970 DOES WORK !!!

it works fine, somehow latest cuda libraries are 64-bit only

Someone at Insanely Mac has posted that GTX970 works.

My testing partner in LA reported it did not.

I will be unable to confirm or deny until I can return to West Coast.

Screen shot is what he sent me yesterday.

I am eager to do Power draw, etc testing once I return, that sort of stuff is beyond scope of what I can explain to him via text and email.

"NVIDIA Chip Model" usually means the driver doesn't recognize the card correctly, are you sure you had the web driver running for that one?
 
I will ask my partner to try again, just difficult to relay instructions via text/email.

He usually does shipping, disassembly, etc and never does the R & D stuff.

I should have been back yesterday but have had one of those unavoidable family situations that has kept me longer than anticipated.

It also says available 256MB Ram.

Anyway this is great news, still holding onto my cMP this year waiting for the first nMP revision.
 
This is great to hear. I hope the power efficiency is great, might do away with some external power supplies. Thanks for everything you guys do, keeping cMPs alive!
 
I know that people can simply look around at the 980 reviews, but I wanted to add my thoughts.

I bought 2 reference 980 cards (EVGA) and have been playing with them in SLI using my PC (i7 4790k@stock speeds).

I'm measuring power consumption via the utility in my UPS, which has the PC as well as my 34" monitor and all the various bits like speakers, mouse, etc. During full load testing, I've not yet been able to get the combined UPS load to exceed 451W. In addition, it idles at 81W. Remember, that's display and all.

To generate load, I'm using 3dmark, Valley, Heaven, etc.. all the usual synthetic gaming benchmark tools. Temps have yet to exceed the mid 70C range, and I can't hear the GPU fans unless I take the side off the PC and put my head right next to them. Heck, my motherboard only runs case fans as needed, and the top 2 aren't kicking in for most of the tests, leaving only 1 front and 1 rear 120mm Noctua.

Just food for thought, regarding the card's environmentals.

Edit: Forgot a couple things. The card requires two 6 pin power connectors and will throttle at 80C using stock bios settings. I've not come up against that limit just yet.

Drivers support GTX970 as well !!!

Hey, got back in LA late last night. Just chucked the GTX970 in and it works !!!

So, my shipping guy likely had power cable not snapped in or was using OSX stock drivers, etc.

Time to dig a little deeper and start looking at rom.

Hopeful that we can do an EFI, no promises though.

Thanks again to our green friends at Nvidia. These are some awesome cards for out cMPs !!!

I have tried both Betas, they show CUDA running but don't give any numbers in the Performance section.

Possible that I am overlooking something, I landed at Burbank at 9 PM last night, still shell-shocked from events of last 2 weeks.

EDIT:

Was trying to compare the results of 970 to 980. Not sure what is going on, appears 970 faster, at least in the one test I have run so far. (also note I switched CPU trays) Using Preview to review the screenshots is weird, sometimes it works for a minute or so, then busts into noise. Other times noise from get-go. SO resorted to using Photoshop to look at basic png files.

My guess is that Preview is looking for OpenCl and it isn't hooked up yet.

The guy running company while I was out East reports MANY requests for Mac 970/980 info.

The cards are some ways from solid. Keep in mind that they work in a BETA OS running a BETA Nvidia driver. Not ready for prime-time yet.

How will these cards compare for gaming performance against the ATI 7970 3GB? That's what I'd like to know :)

can anyone check gtx970/980 with DP6 and nvidia webdriver ?

IIRC, at that time it was 334 series, not 343 as in dp8

hint: osx 1.9.6 has webdriver of 334 series, just gm100 kext is missing.

Windows 8.1 and BF4 2560x1440 :D
 
If it works well, then it may be the very 1st Nvidia card in my old Mac Pro. And then keep my 7950 Mac Edition as a back up.

That's the gist of my question. In OS X of course!

I've 100% abandoned Windows. So while the performance tests as linked above are nice and it is obvious this new nVidia card is much faster. What I'll be looking for once MACVIDCARDS gets them in the wild is real world performance and stability information in OS X. Not a question anybody can answer yet.
 
If I were to get a 4,1 Mac Pro and flash it to 5,1 would I be able to just put in a 980GTX with Yosemite and it would run fine? Other than no grey apple logo boot up?

Needs DP8 and web driver.

"Fine" is further than I would go right now. No OpenCl apparently and CUDA .....hard to say.

This is BETA folks...not ready to run your work stuff, but all indications is that full support is coming.
