hello guys. been looking over the forums and havent found anything that would help me yet.

Just to fore warn, I have only ever used PC's. I am very computer savvy, however when it comes to macs i know absolutely nothing. My dad gave me his mac pro 1.1 to mess around with and so far I like what I see. But as far as knowing where anything is or abbreviations or shortcuts, I'll need to be walked hand in hand like a 5 year old crossing the street!

Ok so right now this thing is running an ATI Radeon x1900 I believe, 512mb card. It is as old as the computer itself. Tried to run a couple games on steam its telling me the graphics processor is not supported.

It is running OSX 10.7.3

I have a NVIDIA 550 TI (no brand name it is just the black and green NVIDIA card) 1gb card that I want to put in it. From what I read it should just work, but I will not be able to see the boot screen or anything before the operating system starts, which doesn't matter to me.

I put the card in, let it boot for about 8 minutes and nothing happened. Shut it off and turned it on again, still nothing.

Put the ATI card back in and downloaded the NVIDIA drivers and they would not install, I'm assuming because the ATI is in it.

And here we are . Any help would be appreciated !

thanks so much guys. upgraded to 10.7.5 and it worked no problem.

now i'm getting picky... i run iracing, and the performance is terrible. the specs of the mac are a lot better than my pc. pc is running 4gb ddr2 ram, dual core 3.0 ghz cpu , same nvidia 550ti card , and runs iracing full settings at a locked 84fps . i have it almost all the way down and i'm barely running 25fps . am i missing anything or is it just the mac?

Games always seem to run better on Windows than it does in OS X. I suggest you try installing Bootcamp and try running the games in Windows on your Mac Pro.

It's DirectX vs OpenGL thing IMO. Games are optimized for DX, OS X uses OGL.

It is not the Mac, it is OS X. Install Windows on your Mac and the games will be up to par.

Windows has had 12 years of incremental OS and driver improvements for gaming. OS X has had 12 years of ignoring gaming.

Alright, thanks everyone for the feedback. Looks like I'll be installing windows on my mac lol
