What macOS version you are using? 4K drives work with 10.12, 512K and 4K with High Sierra. You said Mojave, so both are supported. What shows into the PCIe and NVMExpress tabs of System Info?

Have just upgraded to Mojave

have tried two different ones still nothing am slightly puzzled

Almost all pre X100 PC motherboards don't have native NVMe support, you have to test the PCIe adaptor + blade combo into a recent PC - Skylake or newer.
Thanks but don't have the option for that don't know anyone who would help in the area too

If the blade does not show into NVMExpress tab and PCIe, or is defective or is incompatible. No drivers, software, settings needed after BootROM 140.0.0.0.0 - just works.
