Hello there,

Has anyone come across a situation in developing applications (ex. 3D editing/rendering, photoshop, high-res audio) where you needed an NVMe interface as part of your storage workflow, as opposed to SAS/SATA? I know NVMe is pricier, but has anyone come across a situation where the increased performance of NVMe justified paying more?

I appreciate any insight... thank you.

Need? Not necessarily.

I imagine there are plenty of people who don't "need" it but time costs money for them. i.e. Audio Professionals renting out a studio.

If you run Blackmagic Disk Speed Test you'll see all of the video codecs and resolutions your drive is fast enough to support. Any people that rely on more data-intensive codecs and use such videos in their workflows explicitly need an NVMe.

Example (from Google):

I'm tempted to say if you don't know if you need it, you don't need it.

You asked last time and I gave the same answer what apps do you use and can you give an example?

If you are getting a mac pro 7.1 your spending about 10K so i can't see why you can't get a NVME drive for boot disc but im tempted to say if you don't know you need it then that's all you want

If you relay want to look at some professional apps using NVME look here

Pugetsystems do the best benchmarks on professional applications with unbiased and clear analysis, they test on windows but it holds true on osx (same app's any way).

This one is a nice example - HD v sata SSD v PCIE SSD

Right.. but I am just attempting to understand the theory behind this. Like, what if i was running an application that WOULD need faster storage. What would those applications be, and why? Thank you for providing those links. I will definitely look into them :)

What I’ve found is I want my fastest disk to be my scratch disk there is benefit to having that disk be at least sold state.

Since I don’t make movies of any real length I don’t know if NVME is better at sustained long writes or not but I will say a minimum of solid state makes Ps and Ai much more pleasant.

If you’re thinking about using an NVME boot my honest opinion is meh I’m sure things are stopwatch faster but it’s not all that noticeable over SATA 3

Wow those articles are very helpful. This is totally the direction I am looking into. If you can find any articles comparing the performance of NVMe to other types of drives I would love you forever lmao
