for reasons i won't get into, my mouse and keyboard are connected to my intel imac via a USB hub. since doing this, neither my mouse or keyboard will wake up the computer if i put it to sleep. i CAN wake it up by giving the power button a quick press. is this method o.k./safe to do?

It is safe. That's one of the functions of the power button. STrange though, that the USB devices are not registered to wake your Mac.

Maybe try the following: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

It is safe to wake it up with the power button. Although it is odd that the keyboard and mouse won't wake up your computer. If you connect them directly to your iMac, does it wake your computer up?

if directly connected, yes they do wake it up. this all started when i routed them to the hub. basically, because of the way my new desk is set up, my keyboard that came with the imac can't reach the imac. (thanks for the 2-foot cable Apple!) didn't feel like getting raped $32 for a usb extension cable so i'm simply using my USB hub.

nice! thanks for the link. all the local electronics stores wanted over 30 bucks. figured i'd find something cheaper online, but not THAT cheap. cables are such a sham!

No problem, and yeah, monoprice is always great for cables. They are so cheap there, you just gotta watch out a bit for shipping. But you can't complain about buying a cable for a buck :p
