My dad has gone abroad with his iPhone 3G and I was woken up at 4am this morning and read a text message and felt this huge panic to get out of bed and sort this problem, I didnt get out of bed, but I've barely slept.

I have been asked to check his contract bill which I am in the process of trying to access, but the text quotes "While abroad all data used is excluded from your tariff allowance and charged at £6 per MB (£3 in the EU). To monitor usage select settings then usage on your iPhone". He then tells me his usage is 59MB, which means he has a bill of about £354 currently. Now you know why I havent slept.

First of all, I'm highly confused. I was told by the Carphone Warehouse where the iPhone was purchased that the only thing that needed to be changed on his phone was "data roaming", and that this needed to be turned to off. This has been done, and we were told that this would prevent any excessive charges. So what 'data' is it reffering to? I'm not an expert at this stuff, so please excuse me if this is a very simple question, but its one that has been worrying me! I havent been able to get into the bill yet, so I cant see if hes actually been charged but the feeling in my stomach isnt a good one.

Secondly, I'm about to go abroad in a week, how can I avoid these charges?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Did he re-set his data usage to zero before he left the country?

Probably not, so thats maybe the problem as there is nothing on his bill. But just for my knowledge, if he has data roaming turned off, it shouldnt be a problem and he shouldnt be getting charged for data usage, correct? Or have I completely misunderstood what "data roaming" is?

I used my iPhone for a week in France last year and turned data roaming off before I left the UK. It used no cellular network data at all during my holiday and I just used the free wi-fi in my hotel for getting my email.

Be aware that sending a MMS from abroad can turn data roaming back on, so I would warn him about sending picture messages.
