Hi guys,

I was just wondering if anyone here has had their iphone legally unlocked on O2? and how easy it was / what was your experience

http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/unlockmyiphone.html

In the FAQ section of the O2 site it says that this will only work on iphones bought from an O2 / Apple store or CarphoneWarehouse - but would the unlock work on say a new iphone locked to O2 bought on ebay? how would they know where it was bought from?

Thanks!

i have - went to website entered details and then wait - txt back saying unlocked

easy but then mine is out of contract - im sure o2 will look at the IMIE number to work out if your's is out of contract too

The unlock mechanism involves registering your phone's IMEI number with the Apple update server. I think what O2 are saying here is that they can only do this for "their own" IMEI's, they wouldn't for example be able to unlock an AT&T phone. That means it wouldn't matter where you got the phone as long as it was originally O2.

I am still well within contract and they unlocked my phone.

Why shouldn't they? I still am contracted to keep paying them…
