Usual caveat first — apologies if there is already a thread on this, but a quick search didn't reveal one.

I've finally invested in an iPad, which I will use while travelling to the UK instead of my old set-up of my MacBook Air with O2 datacard (for working) and a backup iPhone with O2 PAYG SIM (for push email). However, looking at the O2 website the set-up appears complicated, involving inserting the SIM, opening iTunes, downloading an update and registering an account — all just to use their £2 a day data service.

Is this all really necessary, considering I will have to do this while on the move? Can I not simply buy my data access before I leave, insert the microSIM on the move, open "settings" and enter "payandgo@o2.co.uk" under APN to get connected immediately, as I have always done with my iPhone?

On mine, I just popped the sim in, went to Cellular Data > View Account and paid there, didn't have to plug in, do settings etc.. This was even after a holiday in Germany.
