i have a intel imac core 2 duo with an somewhat weedy pcie ati radeon x1600 video card ( which is better then the agp geforce 2 in this here imac G4) and i was wondering if its powerfull enough to run oblivion in windows xp or if should not bother
my pentium 4 tends to choke on the game
and i was wondering if i shoudl try it or save myself all the frustration

Check the official requirements. Oblivion is an older game - I expect it would be fine. Your GPU isn't top-end, but Oblivion doesn't need to today's top end.

As for processor, Core 2 Duo is MUCH faster than Pentium anything :)

A friend of mine played Oblivion on his x1600, 2ghz C2D iMac and it ran at native resolution, just without HDR/Bloom on. Or if you wanted HDR you could lower the resolution. Either way it'll run fine!

I don't think you'll have any problems running the game. It's an older game but you're going to get very very good graphics even by today's standards.

oblivion isnt that old
just 2 years and even then its system specs are daunting
it wants a 3000 mhz p4 1 gig of ram and an ati x800 or geforce 6800 video card or higher
and its the only pc game i play that has driven my pc to its knees ( considering said pc is well over 6 years old now its impressive oblivion even bothers to boot let alone be played )

and i am quite aware that my core duo out performs a aging p4 in every way possible i was just doubting its 128 mb video card
seems i didnt have to so its time to retire the p4 permanently

Indeed. You MAY have some trouble running it with mega effects at high resolutions, but you should be able to play the game ok.

For a frame of reference, my C2D 1.86 GHz 2GB RAM 8800GTS 640MB Gaming PC ran it at 1440 x 900 with every setting maxed out(plus forced 8x AA, 16x AF on top of HDR) and got 20-30 FPS anywhere in the game, it only dipped towards 20 in crowded towns, and never below 20.

Obviously it's graphics card is far more poweful than yours so you'll be adjusting settings in accordance with your desired framerate.

for a frame of reference on what i am normally playing oblivion on
a pentium 4 2000 mhz
1 gig of ram
256 mb agp nvidia geforce 6200
using oldblivion low poly gras and tweaked graphics it plays on low medium with 15 to 20 fps
and is quite playable in 800x600

The iMac will be leagues and bounds better, higher settings and higher framerate plus no Oldblivion await you.
