We all know Adobe suck but I have a personal story to share about them. Before I tell you the story, let me state once again they suck, big time. Not in a Microsoft sort of way, because with Microsoft, if you don't like them, you can simply use OSX, Linux or many of the other types of Operating systems out there.

No Adobe suck, they know they do, but at the moment there isn't really much we can do about them until the alternatives for them develop into something more sophisticated. I know about most of the alternatives and have tried them, at the moment I simply won't jump through the hoops necessary.

I've tried "Pixel", it has no magnetic lasso. I'm trying Lineform as it is and I know about Quark but don't need it yet.

Anyway...

I recently purchased the Student Edition of CS2. With this purchase you DON'T get a serial number in the box, you got to wait up to 7 days for Adobe to email you the code. I bought this product knowing this, but then, why should I wait? It's infuriating to have this software sitting next to me and not be able to use it. I want to use it now but cannot due to whatever reason Adobe care to not mention.

If I pirated the software, I know I would have an easier time.

I rang the help line today to ask if they had received my email, this is the one where you proved you bought the damn thing because I didn't get an automated response from Adobe so just incase, I sent them 2 more emails asking for confirmation of the original email. Still no reply. None, nothing, I might as well talk to myself.

Anyway, like I said, I rang them. But the thing is, you cannot ring the actual educational department, they don't have any phones! You can only email them. I found this out when I hit regular call support and the guy said so. Doesn't this sound a little weird? Don't take it literally, I'm sure they have telephones to make calls from department to department but...

There is a department in Adobe which doesn't make use of a telephone to speak to customers? Even better than that, this same department (or Adobe in general) don't provide automated email responses! I never realised until now firsthand how much Adobe suck. What if they never got the email? How would I know. Stupid.

When I do get my email, I'm going to respond with a big **** YOU and a gracious thanks for making me wait to use a product I legitimately bought and paid for.

That is all... other than the fact I might ring them up again.

Wow, I didn't know the educational Adobe products worked like that. Is this new with CS2? It really stinks. I'm sorry you're having such a rough time with it. :(

That's weird. I purchased both CS1 and CS2 from academicsuperstore.com, and they both had serials.

I once sent an email to Adobe questioning if they provide a way to upgrade from Elements to the full Photoshop at a reduced rate. It took them over a month to respond.

When I bought the education version of Illustrator CS it came with a serial. But that was a couple years ago.

I've had similar problems with Adobe - about 6 weeks response time for emails. The next time my serial number problem occurred (it was a known problem/glitch with their system accepting their own serials) - I just called - took me ages to find the telephone support, it was a long experience (and expensive from Australia) but got it fixed and hoped I'd never need to sort it out again.

Adobe seem to have set their whole 'customer' side of things to actually avoid ever talking to their customers. Only the really really really determined get past that level of ambivalence.

Yes sad to say, this is how it works. Its okay, I'm only a student, its not like I really want to use the product or anything. But the logic behind this process is annoying and when I get my serial I'm going to town on them... via email...

I've got product activation waiting for me as well yet!

That's wierd because I bought the Student CS2 and I had to do the request a serial number business, but I got mine instantly. It took all of like five minutes. Strange that yours says you have to wait up 7 days.

I live in Europe if that means anything. All the Customer service numbers on this sheet are for European countries. Must be a different process under the US.

I forgot to mention by the way that the form you need to fill in and email Adobe won't show up on a scanner.

I scanned it under preview mode and it was there, scan it properly and CS1 magically conjures up a blank piece of paper. However, if I stuck my student card in with the form it showed up. The scanning process also added colour to the underlined segments on the form.

Adobe suck and they are weird.

I had almost the exact same thing when I purchased Macromedia Studio 8 (Academic Version) about 9 months ago.

The box comes with the install disc but no serial number. You have to fill in various forms and fax it along with a scan of your student ID and a stamped and headed letter from the University confirming that you're a student.

As if gathering up all that isn't enough, the fact you have to FAX it to them (I can't remember the last time I've seen a fax machine in about 5 years), then wait patiently while they process your request.

I do remember thinking to myself at one point of how easy the pirates must have it, they just install and go as they've probably got a dodgy serial and a cracked activation program. I certainly didn't feel the 'valued customer' as I should have, having purchased their software legitimately.

Adobe are almost as bad, although the ordering/serial situation was a little easier although you had to sign up to a special student software website via your University network and order from there... Activation is a pain in the ass though. With Microsoft's Windows XP, I've installed my legit retail copy on a number of 'different' PCs (never at the same time, I used to upgrade my PC a lot back in the days before I became a Mac addict) and even to this day I've never been asked to ring for a manual activation (even after multiple installs as I got to grips with Parallels and Boot Camp etc).

Adobe however made me call them each and every time I had to reinstall. Whenever I upgraded from my Powerbook to MacBook Pro, a phone call to Adobe cup in hand, and being asked all sorts of questions as to WHY I was installing it on what looked like a new machine. When I upgraded from my Power Mac G5 to the Mac Pro, yet another call, yet more questions. When Leopard comes out and I reformat my HDD and install it fresh, I expect yet another call to Adobe will be in order.

At what point will software companies realise that these anti-piracy measures are only enraging their legitimate customers and not the pirates? The thought of pirating their software has come to my mind time and again as I battled their order/serial key processing requests and activation...

Sometimes you have to jump through the hoops to get a discount, sometimes it is worth it -- sometimes it is nothing but a PIA.

Please don't get upset, but U.S. Adobe support has always been right there when I need them, online or on phone. Of course they're not looking to give alot of discount for upgrades, but who is!

I don't know what PIA means. The discount is welcome because I am a student but this isn't right, I paid for the software, thats the bottom line.

In reply to another poster, I live in the UK.
@NATO, obviously I know what you are going through and it sucks.

When I bought CS2 about a year and a half ago from my school it didn't have a serial in the box, but I didn't have to wait to get it. I just had to go to an Adobe webpage that was printed in the box and fill in a form and I got the serial right away...

Well the programs I mentioned above are probably the best option that I know of.

Lineform from Freeverse.com which is an illustrator clone.
There is also Pixel which is the photoshop clone, do a google search for that one.

You can demo them and they are quite competant, apart from the fact that Pixel doesn't have a magnetic lasso tool yet. Lineform is really cool but I don't know enough about it yet. The best part of Lineform is that it is only 7 megs in size and loads inside a minute!

Yea.. if they made me wait more than a few hours, i'd just download the cracked version and use that.

I mean, it ain't stealing, since you did, in fact, buy the software.

Then when they finally got around to sending you your number, then just delete the cracked version and get on with life.

I'm sure the reason Abobe asks for you to fax all that crap to them is to keep the thousands of NON STUDENTS who buy 'Educational' versions every year.. sold by merchants who don't bother to check to makes sure a person is, in fact, a student.. and it probably puts a big dent in the student selling his copy to a non student friend when he upgrades, etc.

Adobe is pretty high priced stuff.. heck, i'm still running CS 8.

Are you dissatisfied with the release date for CS9? I know what you're going through, most of us are still waiting for CS3. But thanks for travelling back in time and giving us your opinion on how much Adobe suck. I guess they are still around then in 2014? That's bad.

Uhhh...nobody is going to understand what were saying there. It is CS, CS2, etc. Nobody says I am running Photoshop CS 8. They just say I am running Photoshop CS. That should keep the confusion level down in the future.

Maybe not anyone in Utah. :)

Just for fun, try doing a google search for 'CS 8 Adobe' and see what happens.

Sorry for the confusion. I've been using Photoshop since version 2.0.1, so i'm just accustomed to specifying the version.

Notice the bits in bold? First I didn't fax it and second, how come she got a telephone number?

Of course it seems like a standard reply even though Adobe don't do them. I even phoned them a second time and a different guy said they don't have telephones.

So do I ring her? Can I actually get hold of her? The telephone number she gave me is actually just the general Adobe number. Arseholes, sincerely doesn't begin with a capital letter either.

EDIT (UPDATE): The serial doesn't work...
SECOND EDIT: Hello google viewers. (This thread is the first page on the search engine if you type "Adobe Suck.")
