I was at Best Buy checking out the new MBA with M1. I ran the Octane 2.0 test in Safari and only got a score of around 26,000. I tried a different MBA and got the same score. Next I ran the test on a 13.3" intel MBP, and it scored 45,000. My iphone 8+ scored 34,000. All tests done in Safari.

Can anyone explain why the M1 was so slow compared to an Intel chip and the iphone? Does web browsing feel faster than your previous intel mac?

Here you go, on both the M1 mini and the Intel MacBook Pro, I logged in with my "benchmark" profile, nothing else running, Octane the only tab. The M1 smokes the Intel. Not sure why it scored lower this run on the mini than it did when I first ran it (in my main profile, with other tabs and apps open.) But even lower, it kills the Intel on a "clean" run.

Display models can get pretty congested, for lack of a better word, through the day. You may want to restart the machine before running the benchmark.

The M1 was slow because you were running the test on a display model. Best Buy uses the same system to set up display machines that Apple uses in its retail stores. Consequently, there is a lot of stuff that runs under the hood that can affect performance. One such example is Apple's version of Deep Freeze, which will reset the computer to its "default" configuration (based on how DCOTA is set up) every time the screen saver kicks in or the system is rebooted. With the prior system (Tune & Play), there were options that could be set on the T&P server itself to set a permanent home page for Safari or other basic things, but the overall system was by and large locked down.
