I had an issue today - got an email from Apple saying that there was a problem with my payment method for this month's AppleCare+ charge. I knew my credit card was in good standing, having just used it. When I looked at the card info under my Apple account, the card showed an old account number, no longer valid (checked all three of my devices). I deleted the card and reentered it with latest info. I had not changed anything myself, and Apple had charged to the correct number previously, so it was definitely a screwup on Apple's end.

Edit:

I looked back and the last charge against my card - using the right number - by Apple was five days ago.

I liked this aspect of their message (I got the email on March 4 - note the date in their msg) -
  • If your payment is not received by May 3, your plan will be cancelled and we will notify you in writing via email.
  • Once canceled, your monthly AppleCare+ plan cannot be reactivated.
And it was a valid email from Apple, not phishing.

I would still be very suspicious of such an email. Check the headers carefully to be certain it was indeed from Apple. I suspect it is not from Apple. I get these emails several times a week from Apple, Amazon and Xfinity. All designed to steal the recipient's information.

No - I looked at the source data. The embedded links to iTunes and Apple support were legit links. And it was correct in that my payment method wasn't working for the autopayment (because it had been corrupted).

Excellent. I am always suspicious of any email regarding my credit card and payments. Too many nefarious cretins trying to take people's money.

Agree 100%. I thought the msg was bogus at first but on closer inspection, could see that it was not. That's when I checked my payment info and found it was bad.

I have had a problem that might be related to this.

I have subscription for iCloud Drive. Sometimes the monthly payment would fail the first attempt, it would try again and succeed on 2nd/3rd attempt. It does send an email that it has failed. I do not do anything because my card is active and I use it enough for other payments. So I just let it pass.
I do check my banking app and there was no additional drawing from the card so I am sure that it is not like they change me n times instead of once.
