Only have had the M1 Max MBP 16" for about a week (got it on Monday). Have been using it in conjunction with my workstation so didn't notice this initially.

I'm processing some interviews we shot on-site, and I'm putting together the footage in Adobe Premiere Pro while rendering the finalized clips in Handbrake to upload to 'Tube. Handbrake humming along nicely, and when I export the Premiere Pro footage to Media Encoder, as Media Encoder takes over rendering some of the initial final footage, Handbrake SPEEDS UP and increases render frame rate 2-2.5x. It's almost like the scheduler realize that I want more rendering power and releases the task to a different part of the chip, like the onboard media encoder for some reason.

I'm outputting 4K 60fps from Adobe Media Encoder in H.264. Handbrake takes some of the existing approved and finalized footage and renders to 1080p 60fps H.265 for upload.

Maybe it's just odd coincidence that Handbrake is encoding through some sections that are easier to encode (like text slates) as Media Encoder kicked in to render a new video. Need to test more to see if this is repeatable.

Okay I can confirm this and it's repeatable. Launching Adobe Media Encoder and starting another render SPEEDS UP Handbrake significantly using the H.265 VideoToolBox setting. And the speed maintains higher in Handbrake even if I pause Media Encoder.

Weird.

That is odd, I suspect this may be a bug actually holding back performance of M1 Max that will be fixed in an OS update.

Yes, that's strange. It might be worth a bug report to Apple.

New release of HandBrake fixed it. Now it rips at full speed without needing to launch Media Encoder. Weird.

It seems like the VideoToolbox H.265-10 bit encoder is producing better results now too.

Really? What kind of speeds are you getting? It is still taking me over 30 minutes to encode a 7 minute file to H264. Forget about 265..
