Odd question: Mac Pro in a Car?

I was just browsing eBay, looking for a Mac Pro to use as a webs erver when I saw this listing:

Now, I assume this is just a bogus listing, or a simple mistake, but it made me think "Does anyone have a Mac Pro in their car?"

So, does anyone? The only rationale I can think of would be if you were doing active film production and needed some sort of central hub.

That's actually for a MacBook Pro, not a Mac Pro as incorrectly stated in the listing.

As for actually having a Mac Pro in a vehicle? A strange thought though useful in some limited situations perhaps, such as the film production which you mentioned.

Definitely a typo. First off, a typical 12V power outlet in a car wouldn't necessarily be able to supply enough amperage to safely run a full-sized workstation. However...

Digital imaging techs (DITs) on tapeless filmsets will often require the horsepower of a Mac Pro for processing dailies, performing 1-light color correction, assembly editing, etc. on-site. But more often than not, they're built into specialized carts with other companion gear such as RAID systems, broadcast monitors, etc.

I've seen the same done inside of panel vans, very much like the news stations do, although it's far less common.


But outside of specialized uses such as that, I would maintain that it's pretty silly to operate a 50-lb. workstation inside of a vehicle (especially a moving one). There are far more practical (and more compact and shock-resistant) choices for other applications.

Do a google search for "macmini in car" and you see many people have found really neat solutions for in-car computing. It's apparently not that hard to connect the mini to your dashboard display.
