This is weird, if I have earbuds plugged in and nothing is playing (no audio) then I pull up the keyboard I hear a static pop and same when I take it back down. If music has already playing while I'm doing this no static, so I guess it's only when the DAC activates that it plays this static, I can't notice any static in my music or anything only when I first start up a sound when there was none.

Not a gigantic problem but it is fairly irritating, I am running 7.0.3 and haven't updated out of fear of a less stable system.

Anyone know what this? I recall some static popping I believe on my 4s but I don't think it was quite this noticeable, anyway, anyone know? Also I should note there is a slight wiggle with the headphone cable while it's plugged in the jack, but when I twist it and press it to either side/wiggle it there's no change in sound or anything so I don't think that's a problem.

Make sure its not your earbuds. If its not take it to apple they will hand you a new iPad. Apples that awesome.

The apple store is like an hour and a half away from me so it's not exactly easy to do, I also already have tons of stuff and apps on here that would be annoying to have to do all this all over again.

I've noticed that my 4s does something very similar to this but maybe not quite as pronounced. I've used 2 earbuds and 1 over ear pair of headphone and they all exhibit the strange startup sound static, again no static once something is already playing only when it first starts.

Well you can use iCloud to keep all your stuff maybe call support to see if you can mail it to them and get a new one mailed back to you.
It's weird that you 4s does it to. I just tried this on my phone and it didn't do anything so I tried again and a few tries later I herd a pop thing it seems to me it just happens when I push it in.

Only when you push it in? To try it you can't have like any music active or anything and then you have to start audio or pull up the keyboard. I can also hear the amp turn off after I pull the keyboard back down.

I think I'll update to 7.0.4 and pray that it works.

Did the iOS 7.0.4 work?

No :(

The thing is though this problem really is very minor I don't know what to do, my ipad seems really good other than that and I really don't want to go through the trouble of getting another device.

I swear I hate this garbage so much I just went through 2 samsung note 3s a couple months ago because bad headphone jacks and here I am with my brand new ipad having a similar issue.

Is it affecting sound?

No, as far as I can tell it just makes a static kind of pop whenever I pull up any kind of audio where it once was silent, i might also try cleaning out the headphone jack but I am doubtful that is the issue as I haven't had this ipad long enough for it to get dirty.

Also I can indeed hear a similar thing on my 4s it's simply not nearly as loud. Perhaps a slight noise when the headphone amp or DAC activates is entirely normal and my hearing is simply very sensitive? On my iPhone 4S the static sounds a bit different and also, as mentioned, not quite as loud, but it's definitely there.

Go to setting / sound

Turn off lock sounds AND keyboard clicks

Do you still hear it?

Doing that makes it so that it no longer makes the noise when pulling up the keyboard or locking or unlocking but it still makes the static noise whenever any other type of audio is initiated or stopped. I also much prefer keyboard clicks and lock sounds.

Also there seems to be underlying static from the iPads actual speaker but that might be normal as I have to be holding it to my ear to hear that.

I however don't believe that these static sounds in general are normal and I think I may have to return this unless something magically works.

Yep the ipad speaker definitely has static. Wow this is déjà vu from my experience with the crappy samsung phone I had.

You say starting or stopping audio...exactly what app are you talking about?

Anything really. YouTube, downloaded music, mctube, keyboard pull up, lock screen, all of this causes a static.

As I've mentioned though I also discovered now that my speaker seems to be quite staticky so I likely received a defective ipad, although besides the drive I'm not too worried, I have AppleCare plus and not only that but I bought it at an apple store and I'm within my January 7th holiday return period.

I think the answer is go back to Apple with your ear buds and check the displays. Based upon what you find, exchange it or wait a few years and nature will fix the problem with age.

Yeah I guess I'll have to. Do you have to make an appointment if you're going to exchange a product or how does that work?

Your profile doesn't say where you live but generally I have been able to wait around without an appointment and they work me in. It really depends on how busy they are. If you aren't into hanging around it is best to make an appointment.

I go to the apple store in Louisville ky. They're usually only moderately busy I wouldn't think it'd be that hard as long as I don't need to wait on a genius. Even then I doubt it would be long.

For anyone who is reading this from google and has the same problem let me ease your mind. ALL ipad airs I used had this problem, I used 4 displays and the new exchange unit I got, every single one had the issue.

Heyy! 7 years later I'm facing the same problem with lightning earpods on my new iPhone 13 Pro Max! Whenever I open the keyboard to write something a tiny irritating static sound can be heard from my earpods. What's the solution? My phone's speaker is perfect btw.
