Odds of a good screen?

Long time lurker and Windows user, getting ready to buy a new iMac. All of the threads about screen problems has me a little nervous. I realize that people without problems don't often post, but I'm wondering what chances are of getting a bad one. I wouldn't be too concerned except when I read that Apple is being sued because of screen issues, it worries me. Just wanting a little reassurance.

the lawsuits are old news and the 20 inches sport fixed screens these days. your chances of getting a dead pixel iMac are just as bad/good when purchasing any new LCD monitor..it happens..If the dead pixel is in the center, just have apple give you a different one. ASK the salesperson what the policy of dead pixel returns are. Ask if you can test it out before you take it home as well.

It depends on whether you are getting a 24" or 20" imac!
The 24" has a gorgeous screen. Amazing for watching tv and movies and your photo's look great on it too!

However their is the 20" model.
It only uses thousands of colors, has bad viewing angles, over-saturated brightness and just look like crap! But this is inherent to the 20" so thats what you will get whatever! Some people are happy, my mother being one.

One problem with the 24" is a slight left to right brightness difference, but you never notice it once you stop looking for it! Trust me I'm fussy and I love the 24" iMac's screen. Every day I think that to myself! Thats the one to get buddy! You will love it!

Don't forget the glass is easily removed from the imac too, if you have a little suction cap, just pop it onto the corner of the screen, pull carefully! hehe & the polycarbonate/glass comes off! I prefer it!

I don't know how you would calculate these odds. If you knew the probability of one pixel failing (e.g. from the manufacturer) you could multiply it by the number of pixels. The 24 has more pixels, but is a higher quality screen in general. In the Apple Store you can clearly see the viewing angle difference between the 20 and 24.

If anecdotal evidence means anything to you, I bought a stock 24"/2.93 yesterday and it has no dead pixels.

I just got my 24" on Friday and it's perfection. No bad pixels, no screen bleed, nothing.. yay.

Wow. Thanks for your opinion. But how about some facts.

The only difference i can see from the 20' and the 24 2009 models is the size. Thats it. I own a 2009 2.6 24 for work and a 2.6 20 2009 for home. I had a few weeks ago a 2008 20 for home but took it back. That screen which you are ranting on about the LG/Philips LM201WE3 had a good screen also other than the brightness, turned all the way up it seemed a little dull. The late 2008 20' screen is much, much better.

I don't see how you can say the previous 20' (LG/Philips LM201WE3) had over saturated brightness when it was known for not being bright enough. The new late 2008 20' apparently has a new manufacturer of the screen for the 20'. Ifixit.com have taken apart the new 2009 20. Here is the page. :

Notice that this one displays "millions of colors' no dithering involved. It's contrast ratio is also surprisingly different than what apple is claiming, as is the viewing angle. Is Apple withholding info so people buy "up'. Who knows. Interesting though.

The 2009 model screen seems brighter. And has a different model number.

The 24' screen is more impressive because of it's size. I have read alot of complaints of stuck pixels with the 24's on this site and a few others which worried me a bit before I bought the 24'. Sure enough, my 24' had a dead "stuck' red pixel in the far left corner. You cannot see it and don't even notice it's there, but just something to be aware of if your going with the 24'.
