my 3GS was jailbroken/unlocked just fine running on 3.0. just to have the latest firmware, i decided to upgrade to 3.1.2 using the dev team's latest release from earlier this week.
went through the process fine as always, however no carrier. i'm unlocked, but i use ATT on contract. so i went through the process again. same thing.

GD.

even tried blackrain thinking maybe that'd fix it. nope.

looks like i'll have to do a factory restore and loose my unlock feature. hopefully the dev team will release an update in the future before i travel outside of the country. i have the dfu or whatever information they told you to get before jailbreaking when the 3GS was first released, but i dont know if that'll do anything.

any help? i've been jailbreaking since you first could so i'm not new to it. first problem i've run into like this.

For the last couple patches, the carrier name is no longer displayed. It is only cosmetic. Make sure you get the signal bars and the 3g symbol. If so, then you are connected. It just will not display the carrier name.

I installed makeitmine via Cydia and typed in a carrier name manually.

Are you sure you didn't have the "activate" option checked when you created the custom ipsw?

yes, i knew that was a problem for some and while i prefer my own logo up there, that wasn't a deal breaker. at first i thought that was the problem, but tried making calls and none would go through. sure enough, went into network settings and no carrier was present. not to mention no signal bars.

honestly, i'd have to go back and check. if 'activate' is checked, wouldn't that mean it would activate the phone for you regardless of carrier?

If you have AT&T like you said you did, you definitely do not want to have "Activate" checked. Try building your ipsw again and make sure you leave activate unchecked - I bet that's your problem.

Yup, I can confirm this. I had to do my jailbreak over because I forgot to uncheck activate.

mdwsta4, if you leave activate checked everything will go as you'd expect although the phone never activates with AT&T through iTunes. I was at the point where apps were syncing and I couldn't figure out why the phone wasn't getting a signal. Oops! :)

i hear that. is there something i can check to make sure i didn't upgrade my baseband or that i'm still unlocked (don't have another sim lying around)?

Glad to help! Sometimes it's just the little things that we overlook that can cause the biggest problems.
