Hi guys.

How many of you are running the MacOS Sonoma betas? :)

Just curious, as we are a rather 'uncommon' group of people who are probably more interested in Apple than the average consumer.

It'd be interesting to see it represented as a % as such.

Thanks :)

i don't run betas at all.

i might switch to Sonoma relatively early on after full release though, if there are not too many reports of annoying bugs, glitches and incompatibilities, after having skipped Ventura altogether.

I shouldn't, but I'm like that child, who, when Mummy goes shopping, leaving a big bowl of sweeties on the kitchen table and says, "Those are not for you." . . .

I have the stomach ache to prove it. ;)

a lot of macrumors ppl who aren't on the sonoma betas might logically not be on this particular forum, so it's going to be hard to do accurate polling. people not here aren't going to come here just to click 'no'.

altho certainly, there are people here who are simply 'sonoma-curious'.

i am an apple person, but i run the betas because i am interested in the 'new', in moving forward, and in the adventure (not always fun) of a new OS.

this poll might make more sense on the 'community discussion' or 'mac os' forums... but i personally never visit those, and live only on the forums relevant to my current experience.

just some thoughts

Yes, for both personal and professional reasons. My M1 MacBook Pro 13 is used as my beta system for my personal testing. I also am the Jamf admin at my company, so I start testing as soon as the developer beta is dropped.

The only beta I ever installed was the original (first beta) of MacOS X. I had to apply for that and wait to receive a DVD by mail! I have too much old software and don't enjoy troubleshooting all the problems with new operating systems. There really aren't any new features that I'm looking for.

Aside from not using betas, I don't even install the released versions until they have been around for a year or so. Currently on Monterey and will stick with it until EOL. :)

good practice that i'd normally handle the same.
in this case though, my plan is to only update my "daily driver" MBA in a relatively timely manner (which, if nothing goes wrong will hopefully be around 14.1 or .2 or so), since it is online most of the time and could benefit the most from having more security holes fixed that Apple sadly can't be arsed to fix anymore on older versions.

my "workhorse" MBP will continue to stay on Monterey until i know for sure that it's safe to switch and all my software will still work.

This poll will not be at all scientific or representative of the Mac user base as a whole.

Thats why the title says ‘MacRumors members’ and the OP says

“Just curious, as we are a rather 'uncommon' group of people who are probably more interested in Apple than the average consumer. “

You did read atleast one of them right?😅

That’s true, tbh I’m not sure which of the two would get a more representative measure, I think they’re both somewhat relevant.

If any admins lurking - I let them decide😎

Same. Back in the Lion days, i would happily run a beta (bugs included) for the new features. These days, Im still on Big sur with no urge to update. None of the new features interest me

Like many others I used to run beta many many years ago but about 5 years ago I found that the stability, reliability and impact on work flow was getting progressively worse and stopped using beta's. This experience then extended to the actual releases so for the last few years I've basically stopped updating to the current version until the version after that is release. Most of the new features I don't require or they are mostly cosmetic in nature and you would argue why the need to update an entire OS to get those capabilities.

Historically I've put betas on my spare machine, but my spare machine is a 2015 MBP and can't officially run the recent betas. Like you, I've skipped 13 but it looks like I might move to 14 fairly quickly after release.

that is the nature of betas; unfinished iterations of an OS. there's no logic in looking for 'stability, reliability' in a beta release.

but updated OSes have a lot more going on then the 'cosmetic'. it's the work under-the-hood that (for me, anyway) matters the most. so i choose to help sort out issues (with feedback assistant), enjoy exploring the 'new', and look forward to the (really, never-finished) new OS, and (hopefully) stability, speed, & security.

and new bugs 🙄

You folks realize, of course, that the results will be skewed because the survey is being run in the "Sonoma" forum. It would be more accurate if run in the "MacOS" forum😱

I will be happy to move the thread but, as the original poster, @-BigMac- needs to request it and specify the forum they would like. Normally the way to do this is for the OP to just use the report button and make the request. But since I'm already getting alerts for this thread, they can simply respond here if desired.

No problem, move it as you deem fit :)

I rolled back, to be honest. Even though it is extremely stable, there are still minor annoyances that add up in a day of work.

Windows losing focus while actually still being active. Safari crapping out of the blue randomly so I have to restart the app.

Minor things, sure, but they add up to the frustration.

Oh and please don't "you shouldn't install betas on production machines" me. I know what I'm getting into...

I'm actually running it as my main install right now, I'd been putting off Ventura due to some World of Warcraft complaints of graphical flickers, but completely forgot about it and gave in to the system nag one day and... sure enough, "flicker" was a generous and kind description for what was happening. I figured I'm already in for a restore to Monterey now, let's see if Sonoma fixed it first... Turns out, it did, so I took the opportunity to install Diablo IV using the game porting toolkit, and I'm taking my chances for now!

I haven't run into any recurring problems in Final Cut or Logic, which are my regular work-uses - I don't use Safari as my primary browser, so I've missed that frustration above!

agreed about FCP & logic; both run well. and i have no safari issues (that i know of 🤣), am just using it.

only final draft doesn't work... at all, and the developer is not helpful (i use 'storyist' as a workaround). otherwise, am having a pretty great time on the current beta 👍
