office 2004 for mac - student/teacher version

Not sure where you are but try Amazon, Buy.com or some other vendor. Last but least go to a local college bookstore and see what they have (posted for sale).
It's about the same price at Academic Superstore.
As I understand it there is no upgrade path for the Student/Teacher edition.

The $135 price is for students, teachers, and parents of students. As mentioned above it is NOT upgradeable or resellable -- even if you are finished using it, you cannot transfer the license.
This is distinct from the Education products, which can only be bought by Post-sec students, and usually only from their school's bookstore. Prices will vary by school and what deal they have with Microsoft. Licenses are even more restrictive.

Well I would never sell Office, I plan to buy it for my new Powerbook shortly. Though $85 still is a tad high for me. I'd love $25-$50. Being a student, when you're paying $150 per textbook, even $85 for software is hard to come by. I did however get MS Visual Studio for myself for PC for cheap at school. I'm in computer engineering so that came in handy.
The University of Texas campus store has Office 2004 for Mac for $12!

As mentioned above, this is a non-upgradeable version which is only for the use of the qualifying UT-person (student or faculty).
A friend of mine is a student there & I was astounded when he told me how much he got it for!
So I would definitely check your school's campus store to see if they have a special deal.

iWork 06 is a lot less and does all but excel
