what about apple education discounts?

A. It's ALREADY discounted for education.
B. Apple is not authorized to discount products made by other companies on their store for education; only their own.

As I understand it there is no upgrade path for the Student/Teacher edition.
That is correct.

If you do qualify for this version, check out your college/university bookstore because some schools offer a one-disc, one machine installation version for anywhere from $25-50 (that I've seen here on MR). I wasn't so lucky, but others have reported as such.

My school charges $85. I've never seen it at $25-50

Yer kidding, right? Seeing as the retail single user Office 2004 is $500 - $600?

The $135 price is for students, teachers, and parents of students. As mentioned above it is NOT upgradeable or resellable -- even if you are finished using it, you cannot transfer the license.

This is distinct from the Education products, which can only be bought by Post-sec students, and usually only from their school's bookstore. Prices will vary by school and what deal they have with Microsoft. Licenses are even more restrictive.

It all depends on the site license they are able to negotiate. Essentially, when copies are available at below the price of the student/teacher edition, it is because they are extensions of the site license under which MS sells the software to the school for its own computers. But do beware, these site licenses cannot be resold. If you get Office for $30 out of it, though, seems like a good deal! ;)

A friend of mine gets almost all MS software (Win XP, Office, Office for Mac, VPC, etc) for $5 each but it is only a 1 year licensee.
4 years times $5 equals $20 for Office. Not a bad deal. I wish my school had that.

Well I would never sell Office, I plan to buy it for my new Powerbook shortly. Though $85 still is a tad high for me. I'd love $25-$50. Being a student, when you're paying $150 per textbook, even $85 for software is hard to come by. I did however get MS Visual Studio for myself for PC for cheap at school. I'm in computer engineering so that came in handy.

I paid all $150 for it and I'm happy I didn't have to pay $300-$500. Be happy of what you can get it for because you can't get everything cheap.

The University of Texas campus store has Office 2004 for Mac for $12!

http://www.campuscomputer.com/subpages/microsoft_stw.html

As mentioned above, this is a non-upgradeable version which is only for the use of the qualifying UT-person (student or faculty).
A friend of mine is a student there & I was astounded when he told me how much he got it for!
So I would definitely check your school's campus store to see if they have a special deal.

Man I wish I went to the University of Texas. Again when you're a college student, any discount you can get is good. By the way, I love the Astros ;)

Well he can't be back till May because of not getting the arbitration, so we'll see. Now anyways, before I buy Office, do you all think it's better to just get Office or go download OpenOffice? I've never used anything BUT Office in my life.

By the way, who would pay 500 dollars for Office?

iWork 06 is a lot less and does all but excel

Open Office and other freeware out there for excel type stuff.
