I have just upgraded MS office to 2011 from 2008 because I found that mountain lion had broken the mail merge capabilities of Word 2008. The mail merge now works fine but I now find that an image that I use for the header of the document does not show up when the 2008 document is opened in 2011. There is a placeholder for it but nothing shows nor prints. However if you select the file in finder the image can be seen in the thumbnail. What do I need to do to overcome this?

I would try creating a new file to experiment with. Then I would delete the image and insert->image->from file all over again. Don't ever let anyone tell you MS Office isn't buggy. I find bugs on almost a weekly basis. Formats that don't stick. Items that appear and disappear. I decided not to deal with MS software on any of my home machines and I prefer to use the iWork apps and LibreOffice. I'm not saying Office is pure junk. It has some capabilities that are unmatched, but for me it's just not worth the bloat and occasional bugs. I just prefer to use something else. And it was a long litany of things like your disappearing banner that helped me along in my decision. One thing I would check is if MS has an update available. That might fix your issue. Maybe.
