I turn 18 on Sunday! and to become a man i must own a Mac!
I'am gona order the 2.0GHz 1GB Ram, 80Gb Hard drive, basic macbook, and am wondering which is the best office application for a student to use.
iWork
Openoffice
Neoffice
Microsoft Office
They all seem quite cool, i use word processing and powerpoint the most, although i still use microsoft publisher alot. What do you think would be the best?:)
I like the idea of iWork, but is it more for graphic publishing, such as magazine style pieces?

If you have the money, you should go with the new Microsoft Office. You'll have to use bootcamp, but it is very much worth it. The new features are pretty damn good!

But Office 2004 isn't a universal binary, and rebooting just to write a word doc would be annoying.
As Airforce was talking about the Windows version, I don't think he was making any claims about it being universal :p

There's a little more to Office that just writing Word docs... all depends on what the user wants.

In any case, I still try NeoOffice first....

If you can't get a copy of office from your girlfriends little brother for free (; than I would stick with neooffice until office for mac '08 comes out sometime late this year.

Hey congrats on both accounts (manliness and mac-iness)

As a writer, I have been disappointed with NeoOffice and will eventually need to consider an app more suitable to my needs. The way NeoOffice handles formatting and a host of other issues drives me nuts. I can't imagine it being very good for desktop publishing.

I do, however, think you might want to start with it. It is free and later you can decide if it meets your needs. It is fully loaded (for the most part, as it includes PowerPoint support and other Office-like apps) and you might love it like other ppl do.

I work with a lot of Microsoft documents so find using MS Office for MAC the easiest option, esp when moving from the office to home, as I don't need to master a different set of short cuts etc.

But as a student I would say save your $$ and go NeoOffice until you can't do something. By that time the next version of Office for Mac should be out and you should be able to pick up a copy of Office for Mac 2004 dead cheap. It does everything you need of a word processor.

As for actually using next version of Office for Mac or run boot camp / Parallels and the latest version of MS Office I would stay well clear. It's just bloatware. You will never use everything and there are better things to do with you $$ and hard drive. Oh and I support MS products for a living!

How about trying them all out?

iWork and Office '04 both have trials included with your mac, and NeoOffice and OOo are both free...

Having said that, though, I'd still probably go with Office '04/'08 as it will ensure maximum compatibility across all of your documents (and there's not a spreadsheet program for iWork just yet).

If you use publisher, you should try Apple's Pages. It's a layout app similar to publisher. And it rocks.
