Office for iPad Pro 12.9

I was about to edit document with Word only to find it was locked then I googled and found out that I have to pay Office 365 in order to edit. I decided to uninstall Office app for iOS and went back with Pages. I don't want to pay $6.99 a month because I don't use Word everyday.

What about you guys?
 
I have an older version of Office, but never really touch it. Pages works just fine and comes free with my Mac and will save in Word format. Open Office is also pretty good, (don't use it anymore, but have in the past). There's really no need for Office anymore, at least for Mac users.

That was a great surprise for me when I got my iPP 12.9: Office was no longer free because the screen was larger than 10.1". I strongly object to rent my software so Pages for me it is...
 
When I used my Pro, I gladly paid for Office on it. Why? Because Microsoft hasn't abandoned it like Apple has for iWork.

Precisely.

People complain about the lack of desktop apps in iOS then won't pay for it when they are ported over.

I do not think it is but can see how you think it. Buying it does not mean you own the software but have rights to use that version and anything else in the terms and conditions. Renting it is just a different way to ensure you also get regular updates. I am not saying I like that but also recognise the time and effort developers have to put into it all these days and not just cater for one platform.

I'm in general agreement, I don't like to rent software. But there are enough devices in my household that use Office that the $70 a year for MS Office is worth it... for now.

If you need Office interoperability of a higher degree than is offered by Pages, I recommend WPS Office. It is free and there are versions for Windows, iOS, Android, and Linux. I have some documents with advanced formatting and only WPS Office was able to preserve it where the others have failed. I've tried all permutations of WPS Office (Windows/Linux/iOS) <-> MS Office (Windows/iOS/macOS) file interchange.

My primary office suite at the moment is the latest version of iWork because of the seamless capabilities between using it on my iMac, MBA, and 12.9 iPP. (but I prefer iWork '09 over that because of the greater functionality...but sadly no compatibility with the iOS version).

Because I've increased my use of my iPad Pro, I've had to set aside my next choice, LibreOffice... because there is no iOS version and file exchanging between iWork and LibreOffice is not so good.

Likely, but my only point was that people who don't want to rent people should not be acused of not wanting to pay for software, that's all. I've paid for all my software, including that in my desktop
