Hi!
I want to buy MS word for my mac. I was looking for some reasonable prices and found a lot of offers on the e-bay sell 'digital downloads', key in e-mail. However, I'm not sure whether I can trust those offers and are they genuine? Any experience? What kind of licence could that be? Any other possible ways to acquire cheap office 2016 (could be pre-owned possibly)?

LibreOffice Writer is a good alternative, trusted, free and all extra languages are free also.
You can read and write in any Microsoft format too.

it will save as a .doc easy.

If you need Word in particular, and alternatives are not acceptable (Libre, iWork), the digital downloads are the way MS sells the Office suite now. I might hesitate with unknown sellers, but Amazon often has discounted prices, and you can usually get Office at a discount when you buy certain HW from Best Buy, Micro Center and other retail outlets.

Another option is the Office 365 route. Cheaper to get into the game, and if you intend to use on more than one device, the family pack permits up to 5 Mac\PC. This can also be found on sale from time to time. You might pay more over time, but then if MS drops major releases every 2-3 years, the 365 route may be less costly than buying 2016 outright and then paying again in a year or two. 2016 came out in 2015 as I recall, so it is already 2 years into it's lifecycle.

At some point, 2011 will not be supported on newer OS (maybe even this year). Same will eventually be true of 2016.

With 365, you get all updates at no additional cost if you keep your subscription.

Agreed with techwarrior, a couple of bits to add here. I was on board with O365 from Day 1, getting the Home version that has 5 installs and I'm all in with 2016 but mainly the Windows suite. I also wanted to install Word on my iPP and at the time O365 was the only means to get all of the features on the iPP. I also have it installed in a Win 10 VM and on my main Mac laptop; I tend to use Access/Excel/Word and Outlook. My personal opinion is the Mac suite is still pretty gimped when compared to the Win version. Now that Word and Excel on the Mac platform are extensible with MS's add-in "store", this gimped trait may change…

Tip 1 comes from my never paying full price for O365. I got my first year free, showing up with an iPad at an MS Store and showing them my iPad Air, they were handing out free licenses that day to those bringing in their iPads. And, MS sometimes holds 1-day events where they sell Home for $50, that's the license I'm on now. And, Amazon or Fry's have sales all of the time on O365, and I get that price matched at a nearby Best Buy.

Tip 2 - if all you need is a Personal license (1 install), go buy a cheap new Win tablet - they almost always come with a free 1-year key for O365 Personal. Then sell the tablet.

Tip 3 - LibreOffice doesn't suck, but I don't care for it despite the nice price. Avoid those eBay keys like the plague.

And, official support for Office 2011 ends on 10/10/17 - End of mainstream support on Office for Mac 2011 - likely right around the time the next macOS comes out.

There's some inexpensive options with Office 365, and they give you more then just Excel, Word. For instance you can run them on your iPad, or have 1TB of cloud storage. I'm not a fan of subscriptions but in this case, I find Office 365 to be something worthwhile.

No I haven't done anything super fancy with it myself at the moment, but I'm sure others have

Had a coworker using it munge the formatting and headings in a complex document we were co-writing. Took a week to repair it back in MS Office. Avoided it ever since. O365 subscription is a small price if need Office apps for work.

Who is your employer? You may be able to get a discount. I got 2016 for Mac for $10 through mine.
