Office HD+ Dropbox (confirmed) and why it matters

The nice folks that make Office HD have just confirmed that Dropbox support will be in the next update that they are just finishing. This matters because it finally removes the roadblock of being able to open office documents, edit them and save them back again to dropbox... and thus eliminating all that crap of having to email files back to yourself and trying to keep them in sync.

All devices that you have dropbox installed on all automatically have all the files in sync.

I love Dropbox and use it extensively between my desktop, laptop, and iPhone. When my iPad arrives, I'll be sure to get the Dropbox app on it. What's Office HD?

Office HD creates, opens, edits and saves doc and xls files. It's basically a light version of Microsoft Office

When the update for Pages was released, I wrote a review that said that landscape editing was much needed and the only thing (for me) to make this a perfect app was DropBox integration. I don't see Apple adding it into Pages, so I guess this is the 2nd best thing. Just hope the GUI will be nice to look at.

Why would they use Dropbox when they have MobileMe's iDisk? They need to improve MM and iDisk to be equal or a better solution than Dropbox.

Apple wouldn't, but many people will. The reason? It doesn't cost $100 a year (or whatever MobileMe costs).

And some people pay 100$ for Dropbox 50GB or 200$ for 100GB plans.

If Apple were smart, they'll do the same thing. 2GB free for MM/iDisk/iWork.

I agree. If Apple let users have 2GB free for MM/iDisk/iWork, I might consider switching over. Otherwise, I use Dropbox almost entirely for documents (which 2GB is fine for), as well as the occasional useful program installer or two (small ones). I'll sometimes use Dropbox to transfer a 500mb file max, but I NEVER keep it there wasting space. I use Google Mail/Calendar/Contacts, so I have free push mail/calendar/contacts with 7 GB of storage.

How is the Office 2007 compatability? I thought I had read that it was not that good.

Office HD seems to work well for me. I haven't noticed much in the way of problems with 2007 compatibility, but I am a fairly light user, and don't use macros etc. Letters, spreadsheets all work fine for me, and do not have the lag that you get on pages and Numbers on the iPad. The thing I prefer about dropbox is the auto-syncing. I guess iDisk does it too, but it just feels better on dropbox

I find when using numbers on the iPad, actually making a spreadsheet takes forever. There seems to be a lag when you click on cells and then go to type in them. I am of course open to that being only on my iPad, but I find the other prog faster. I prefer iWork on my laptop over office though

Agreed - actually I'd pay a small subscription for the synchronisation of MM and 2Gb free, but the money they want for the service now is a joke. I cancelled it before the trial period ended and went to dropbox.
