I have a genuine version of office Mac 2008 with code and want to install it on a 2012 A1286 running Monterey, is this possible?

Since it can’t run Office 2008 use LibreOffice. It’ll be more compatible with the Windows version of MS Office than that old Mac version anyways.

You can change settings to save spreadsheets, documents and presentations to MSOffice formats by default. If you don’t want the old fashioned toolbars you can change to a more modern ribbon interface.

Will they not allow it to update using the code on the box or is it just finished?

Office 2008 is “finished” because Office 2008 is 32-bit software, and 32-bit software can no longer run on the post-Mojave builds of macOS. (Meanwhile, on the Microsoft side, they stopped supporting it and Office 2008’s updates quite some time ago). There’s the option of buying a licence for the latest version of Office for Mac, which will have its own “code” (serial), or as @velocityg4 noted, an open-source office software set like LibreOffice.
