An IT friend of mine at work just sent the guy and email offering to host for free.

I don't agree with the concept of not being able to rip my own DVDs for personal use. F that. Just the other day my brother borrowed a DVD and scratched it - fortunately it was my copy and the original sits safely in it's case. If I wasn't able to rip my DVDs I would have had to shell out 15 bucks to replace it - now that's criminal.

Too bad they're going after this guy, but I doubt it will kill MTR development.

That is a shame. However I have never used MacTheRipper because it always crashes whenever I try to rip anything with it. And it isn't like these are locked DVDs, they are ones that I made myself (burned on a DVD camcorder). Probably because I am using Tiger and the free version (2.66?) but I am not going to buy the newer version untill I know it will work.

MacTheRipper is FREE software, it works fine here on Tiger (same version).

I've never had MTR crash - works flawlessly.

MTR - rip the DVD
DVD2One - compress the DVD
Toast - burn the DVD

man, glad i have my copy already. DRM, macrovision, and all that anti-stuff is going to be the downfall of all these companies. apple needs to be careful, too...(no slams for saying something cautionary about apple, please)

my setup exactly. i'm upgrading to toast 7 to see if their compressing function is as good as dvd2onex (paying about $20 to upgrade after selling my copy of v.6) i doubt it since it's basically popcorn integrated into toast, but it would be nice to have one less step in the chain...

Huh, I have never gotten it to work.

Oh it is *free* in that you can get the previous version for free, the newest version is shareware. (or was)
