The official Youtube app was updated a few days ago, and now I noticed that all videos play at very low quality when I am on LTE (Verizon iPhone 5). Before the update, Youtube videos played in HD even when I was on LTE instead of WIFI. I don't know if this was a mistake by Google or perhaps a way to push us to the web version instead (since that still works fine in HD)?

At any rate, in an effort to resolve this problem, I installed Unrestrictor and enabled it for the Youtube app. However, the videos are still playing at very low quality, so I don't think restrictor is working.

Anyone else notice this or have any suggestions? Yes, I know I could use Protube (which isn't even full screen on the iPhone 5) or the web app, but I prefer the official app's interface and responsiveness.

I just checked, and 3G Unrestrictor is not working for my YouTube app either. It worked fine when I first installed it.

The original ProTube allows streaming HQ over cellular data. In fact, it lets you choose any available resolution. Most of the times I can choose between 240p, 360p, 720p, or 1080p. Plus you can download any video in those resolutions. Or you can download just the audio of any video. ProTube is the best YouTube alternative. I don't use the ProTube YouTube extension so I can't comment on that. But the original is one of my favorite Cydia packages. Plus there's an addon package in Cydia called "open in ProTube" which opens all YouTube URL's in the ProTube app.

Try the pro tube extension

Thanks, that seems to be working! I didn't know there was an extension. Do you know if there's a way to set it to default to high quality? As of now, when I start a video, it plays at lowest quality by default, and then I have to touch the gear to change to a higher quality for each video.

I do have Protube installed for times when I want to download a video. However, the app is not enhanced for iPhone 5's screen size, and I find the interface to be less responsive without recent updates to the interface. Thanks for your suggestion and comments.

It's nice to hear about alternative solutions, but are there any ideas about why 3G Unrestrictor is suddenly not working with the native YouTube app??

3G Unrestrictor has been updated for the latest Youtube app. I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but I thought I'd post it here for those who were still interested in a solution to this.

I use My3G to unlock YouTube, also removes the 50mb download ceiling for updates and apps while on cellular data.
