I'm still thinking which to buy.

Office is a must for me, applework doesn't do it for me as I have to make it compatible with my school's wintel without having to save the same file multiple times everytime I modify it.

My questions are:

what are the things in the retail box?
is it worth it to spend double for the same software, while one is retail and comes with documents and etc.?

whatever you do i would get the Student and Teacher edition if you are eligible because it gives you three licenses and is muuuuuch cheaper

thanks for ur concern

indeed i'm getting the Student ed.

in canada the price is at 200$ for a retail box at futureshop
and the one that my college will be selling will be an OEM ver. at 100$

my question is, is retail better? any benefits?

i was just wondering what does OEM stand for? thats part of the reason i didnt answer your first question in full...

I don't know, google it and let me know too =P

it's like when u buy PC hardwares

u can have a Maxtor HD in a maxtor or whatever companies' name distributing the maxtor HD in a box with documents and the full maxtor warranty. This will be consider Retail

and the OEM will be the HD itself in an anti-static bag seal like the retail but without the box and the full documantation and drivers or IDE cable depending on the type of things it comes with, and u get only 3 or 12 months warranty, but this has change a lot.

and the hardware situation the price difference will be around 50$ depending the type and brand

like the Intel CPU, u have a price difference and it comes with the intel fan, intel sticker showing the type of CPU ie P3 P4 P4 HT blablabla and if burns after 12 months u can change it with intel under the warranty of 3 years and the oem will have only the CPU with nothing but a 12 months warranty

in the software case I don't know what's the difference in the retail box. since my college sells the software oem to its student, they have a student price and its 50% less but if the retail box comes with some goodies might get it.

although I've been an office user for a while it is always nice to have a manual to study, since this 2004 is pack with new stuff i wonder if the extra 50% tag price will the worth it for the manual if that is the only thing it comes with.

I know that I can get an office 2004 for dummies or download stuff of the net but what will it cost me in terms of time and space, practical? -_-...

is the office v.X manual avail. for d/l on-line?

thanks for reading

Manual? Ha! My Office v.X came with a sorry excuse for a manual. It has like, two pages on each programs with hardly any information. More of a advertisement actually. Yes I know how stupid that is - advertisement for a product you've already bought!

ah, sorry for being lazy today :D

but i would then say go with the OEM and save money. i got the retail from the apple story and i dont know where the "manual" is anymore and the box in the garbage, basically all that you get in the box is a case and the pathetic excuse for a manual and its a waste of plastic. The new features really arent all that hard to figure out so i would think you are safe

I don't think it was meant to be a manual, but an overview of some of the new features in 2k4, versus v.X. Though I would think it would be a better thing to show people before they buy.

OEM = original equipment manufacturer. Means cheaper because it doesn't have all the packaging and extra marketing materials.

Thanks reaper. Good for people to know the term. FWIW, in the original usage (or how I learned it in the mid to late '90s), OEM meant something slightly different. For example, if you have a hard drive with an Apple label, you would know that since Apple doesn't make hard drives, some other company (such as Quantum or Seagate) is the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), regardless of the label.

edit- if you ever need to look up technical terms, check out whatis.com.

thx guys

OEM, ah... I knew that it was Original something something ahahaha

good to know, thanks once again. I guess that the OEM will be the choosen one ahahahaha.

love college, u get all the benefits u didn't have b4
