Offline songs will not delete from iPhone

I bought a new iPhone 6 last, which happily coincided with the launch of Apple Music. I started by downloading my existing playlists onto my phone to listen to while on the train. This also downloaded my Christmas playlist, and for obvious reasons I don't want Band Aid popping up while I swelter in the July heat. Despite repeated attempts, those songs simply will not delete from my phone. I have tried the "Remove Download" button, which although then changes to "Make Available Offline", the songs remain on the phone and will play when in Airplane Mode.

On closer inspection, there seem to be lots of songs on the phone which have the "Make Available Offline" option available (and do not have the device icon at the top right of the more button), despite the "Show Music Available Offline" option being selected and also play fine in Airplane Mode.

I am a current iTunes Match customer as well as Apple Music.

Any help appreciated!

It seems like Playlists can be tagged for offline use, it gets the icon. But not all the individual songs.

But if you tag individual songs for offline use, then the song gets the icon.

It makes no sense.

I have tried the "Remove Download" button, which although then changes to "Make Available Offline", the songs remain on the phone and will play when in Airplane Mode.

I had the same issue, and the songs went away by themselves after a while.

I was also told that signing out from Apple Music and signing back in would fix this, though I didn't try.

Another option would be perhaps to go to Settings->General->Usage->Storage->Music and to try to get rid of the songs from there (with the "edit" option). It's a bit of a brute force method though.

If you make the playlist available offline, and then you choose remove downloads again for the playlist, all the songs in the playlist will be removed. However, if you make single songs available offline again, then they will not be removed, even if you remove the playlist. So it kinda makes sense to differentiate between songs which are available offline through a playlist and songs which are available offline through a direct MAO action.

The biggest issue for me is knowing what playlists/albums, etc. are available offline. I have about 30 playlists and I usually make 5 or 6 available offline. But a few days later I don't remember what is downloaded. I wish Apple would make a screen that lists all offline media on one scroll-able screen.

Well, if you flip the switch to oly show offline music, then playlists which are not available offline get a "blank" picture, so that helps a bit.

The "list of all offline media" is basically hidden in Settings->General->Usage->Storage->Music. And yes, that is completely stupid, necause you shouldn't have to manage the contents of your offline library via the settings app.

Yes, except that removing downloads from there often doesn't work. From the settings, it's absolutely failsafe so far.
