I will be traveling to South America this fall. I will not have much if any internet access. This is a vacation and sightseeing, so there will be a lot of photos and videos taken. For those that have taken trips like this how have you offloaded data when you were starting to run out of room. I have a 64GB iPhone 8 and a 128GB iPad Air. I will likely offload almost all of my apps on my iPhone but the iPad will be full of games and movies for the long flights.

Thanks

Best option is to use iCloud, pay for some extra storage which is pretty cheap for 20GB and turn on iCloud Photo Library and enable Optimise iPhone Storage and all photos will get uploaded when on Wi-Fi(or via data if you enable it)

I won't depend on iCloud or any other cloud, in semi-urban or rural S. America. Outside of high end hotels, its not uncommon to have atrociously slow internet speeds, so having access to local drive is the only way to go. During my time in Chile and Argentina, I had a little inexpensive PC to offload my contents.

I have thought about those external devices

I have seen items like these

I have thought of another option-

I have my old iPhone 6. It has 64GB.
It would probably need the battery replacement but my guess is by summer supplies won't be as strained and even if I do not qualify I can get a battery case.

64GB would be more than enough for two weeks of photos and videos (I do not see how I could take that many photos and videos). The downside would be carrying three devices. I have an iPhone 8 and an iPad Air 2 and then possibly this one.

Thoughts?

If your iPhone 8 is also 64 GB then what’s the problem with carrying just that instead of taking the 6 as well. You’re not gaining any extra memory, but losing out on camera quality.

I think the best option would probably be just to get a cheap laptop instead of your iPad. Use the laptop for entertainment and storage. Use your phone for taking pictures and videos.

Try one of these and their App for your iPhone and iPad. Then get as many micro SD cards as you might need. Beware as the info on Amazon says, 64 and 128 cards have to be formatted fat 32 with a maximum cluster size. Be sure to use it before you leave so you know how it works. You may need to Google for a computer app to format like that, not sure you can do it with Windows 7 or 10 without a formatting app. You have to use a computer to reformat the card. Or just don’t go bigger than 32 gb. You can’t watch video directly from the card but have to copy it to the app on the iPhone or iPad to watch. You also can’t see file thumbnails on the card or in the app on you iPhone or iPad just file names. Plugged into a computer it works just like a card reader.
Naztech Xtra Drive 16GB USB 3.0 Mobile Flash Drive with Lightning Connector For iPhone, iPads & Computers https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019YZD1T8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_JUdEAb91ECMVB
It looks like Amazon has two versions now, not familiar with the other one. You’ll also need a lightening plug extender to use it with most iPhone and iPad cases or just remove the case.

He just stated he won't have much internet access.... iCloud option is a no-go.

@cuestakid go fine with your 64GB. Unless you take lots of videos, I highly doubt you will fill 64GB worth of space in a trip.

Also, iPads can unload into SD cards via adapter.

Doh! My bad totally missed that

Thanks for everyone’s advice. I think I will just strip the 8 as far as I can go to basically allow just my music and then the photos and videos to load.

As for the iPad since I want to travel with as less small items as I can, I will look at those adapters and see what my options are.
