Looking for success & fail stories having no-data plan on iPhone. I've had the OG iPhone since the beginning. We also have a 3Gs. We are considering 1 or 2 iPads.

As my OG iPhone slips away tech wise, it is still a great phone and I don't need another. I am considering canceling my data plan to support a potential 3G iPad data plan.

I would like to use my iPhone on wifi but isn't there a great chance I'll accidentally connect to EDGE?

OG iphone? You mean a 2G iphone?
On those I believe they will let you remove the data plan and put a block on your account if you ask.
Just call them up.

OG = original. I didn't think there was any such thing as a 2G iPhone. But I came asking for help, right? When I got the phone from my wife, the att rep said it would be OK but there was a risk of going online un-intentionally.

Everyone here and most places online call it the 1st Gen iphone or 2G iphone.
I never heard of OG iPhone but call it whatever you want.
Yes, call up AT&T and ask them to put a block on data on that account so you wont be able to accidentally use data when away from wifi.

the "2G" in "2G iPhone" refers to the second generation wireless data network (EDGE) that the phone uses.

have them put a WIX block on your data account and remove the data plan

Or just cancel out your apn details on the network screen. It cant connect if there is nothing typed in that box

That's because OG is usually reference for "Original Gangsta." Depending on where you live, you might have never heard this term. I've never heard of anyone using it in replacement for just the word "Original."

OP, sorry, I can't offer any advice on your original gangsta iPhone.

Lol :D
Thats exactly what came to mine when I read it too.
We are all OG's :D

That sounds like it would work if they would let me cancel. I just got off the phone with att. They said you can not cancel data on an iphone. I told her I don't believe it ('cause there's got to be a work around, at least). I may call them back later.

AJ, for the sake of a gentle argument; Apple calls it the original iPhone. I just like the abbreviation of OG to make typing easier.

Does AT&T require a data plan on the 3G and 3GS? I've gotten mixed responses on this.

Not a prob.
I was just making sure you meant the original iphone thats why I was asking. Cause on that one they suppose to let you cancell the data but on the 3G and 3GS models they wont.
Call back and speak to a different rep. Some times different AT&T reps will be misinformed about things while other reps will be nicer and more helpfull. Gotta talk to the right one I guess.

What you need to do is put your SIM card in a non-smartphone... phone and then call them. Tell them you're not using the iPhone anymore and provide them with the IMEI number of the phone you're using.

Once they remove the data plan, ask them to put a WIX block on that line. Say thank you, hang up and switch the SIM card back to your iPhone and you're done.

I've done this several times over the past couple years and never had any issues. Lately I've been hearing/reading about a lot of people getting data plans added to their account when AT&T "swept the network" and saw a smartphone.

Yes, they do on 3G and 3GS models.

Again, switching the SIM card around will allow you to cancel your data plan on ANY iPhone. It's just a question of how long it'll be before they put it back on.

Yes, that would be easier than arguing with AT&T.
I doubt they would bother him with Network sweeps since he got a 2G iphone anyway.

From the AT&T Website

This comes directly from the AT&T website. While this isn't under an original phone, which you cannot purchase from them now, it does deal with the iPhones they have available.

Feature
Please note: A data plan is required for the life of your iPhone service and cannot be removed in the future.
Data Plan for iPhone $30.00/month

Data Plan for iPhone includes unlimited data in the U.S. Access rich HTML email and desktop-level web browsing, as well as Visual Voicemail to listen to voicemail messages in any order you choose.

Please note: AT&T is Apple's exclusive carrier partner for iPhone in the United States. An eligible data plan for iPhone is required. This data plan covers data usage in the United States and does not cover international data usage and charges. If AT&T determines that you are using an iPhone on your account without an eligible data plan, AT&T reserves the right to add an eligible data plan to your account and bill you the appropriate monthly fee.

Just got off phone with att again. You can not cancel the data plan on the iPhone. She said I could put my sim card in another phone and cancel the plan. But then when you make a call the serial number or whatever is transmitted to the account and the data plan is added again. She said if you had any other kind of smart phone before november of 2009 you're OK, but not iPhone.

if you are worried about accidently connecting to edge follow these steps:

1. Launch Safari on your iPhone
2. Go to iphonenodata.com
3. Tap the “Disable EDGE/3G” button
4. Tap “Install”
5. Tap “Install Now” to confirm

A profile which disables data will be loaded into your iPhone, test it out, see if you can use data while not on wifi. It won’t work. If you check your usage stats, you won’t have used any data

If you want to get a data plan one day and remove this profile, go to settings, general, profile, then hit remove.

Good Luck :)

She tried to scare you or she was misinformed herself.
Put the sim on another phone and call to cancell the data.
I know people that are using iphones without data for years.
Even though they reserve the right to do it I havent see it done to anyone I know or trust.

the 2g iphone is definitely original gangsta. do what others have suggested and put your sim in another phone, works fine.

If I get the 3G iPad, that's exactly what I'm gonna do. Thank You EveryOne for the fun and helpful comments, Mick
