OGV to MKV conversion

Any recommendations on how to convert/transcode OGV to MKV format?

Have you tried HandBrake?

If your on a Windows platform I`d try MediaCoder, one of the best free transcoders I`ve used.

I did try Handbrake but it just came up with a message 'no valid source found'

These were desktop video captures taken on Ubuntu 9.04 using gtk-recordMyDesktop

Handbrake certainly seems to recognise it:

[15:18:19] Title is likely interlaced or telecined (10 out of 10 previews). You should do something about that.

But then I get this message repeated a few hundred times...

This ogg file plays perfectly in VLC.

While handbrake might recognise the container, it does not recognise the theora codec as the bottom 2 log lines tell you.

This ogg file plays perfectly in VLC.

Well if it plays fine in VLC, then why not use VLC to transcode it?

you might want to try the developer snapshot of HB (assuming you are using 0.9.3). It uses a newer version of ffmpeg for decoding among other things, so it might work on you're file.
