So I just got off the phone with AppleCare. After my display decided to start going checkerboardy they have decided to replace my machine.

I had a 1.83 CD, 512 Ram, 80gb HD.

They are giving me a 2.16 C2D, 1GB Ram, 120 GB HD, 6x Dual Layer Superdrive!

Thank you Apple! I love your service!!!

Also this was a refurbished machine. They said they would have to give me another refurb but they had no refurbished MBPs in stock. So the person said you may be in luck today and I was so happy lol!

*smashes MacBook to bits*

I... Umm... My cat sat on it...?

Haha, very nice. I'm glad that you got good service!

Score.

The Steve sometimes smiles on us mere mortals.
...or sometimes he spits in our faces.

Sorry, I'm feeling a bit bitter towards my local genius bar at the moment.

(Ironically enough, the Genius Apple commercial played on TV as I was typing this.)

...So, what's your secret? How did you get Apple to replace your machine? :)

3 repairs. This would have been the fourth. She was like I don't have any refurbs right now so I think I can send you a new one. I was like SWEET!

Wow. That's incredible! How old was your machine? Was this replaced under your basic warantee or did you purchase extended?

Is your avatar a Japanese building or a toy being used on a guy bending over?

Wow, are you hard on computers or just have bad luck? That's a lot of repairs! :(

My machine is 10 months old and was replaced under standard warranty. I get a full year on the new one again. I am not hard on my computers I just have really bad luck.

BAD luck?! Dude, you have GREAT LUCK! A new computer for nothing! :D

Everybody keeps on saying that these replacements are 'free' and 'for nothing'. I suspect it's people that haven't experience frequent problems. By the time Apple replaces a computer you feel that it was the very least they could do to make you happy again. Last year I really had no idea what to do. I was on the brink of completely abandoning apple after 15 years because I couldn't deal with all the hardware issues. Apple gave me a new 17" but, seriously, I deserved every tiny bit of it! And it definitely wasn't free given all the wasted hours I spent on the phone with Apple and at genius bars being insulted and ridiculed for wanting a flawless laptop out of the box.

Yeah, I can see that. In this case, it was the forth service call.

You're one of the lucky few...

I bought my MBP CD 2.16Ghz brand new when they came out and it's been sent in three times for 2 displays that quit working along with a power inverter board, and a new hard drive. I've also had 5 replacement batteries sent my way and this was before the MBP was a year old at the end of this March.

I wish I would have had your luck so far on getting a replacement...

I bet if you got the right person on the line and were nice, but firm, you definitely could.

You should also try (just for kicks) emailing Jobs and explaining your situation and that although you love macs, this has been the most ridiculous QC you've ever experienced. If you get a response (and people frequently do - albeit about a week later), you'll typically get taken care of the best through this route (Cybergypsy was sent a brand new 17", fully loaded MBP).

What's really sad about the whole AppleCare experience is that I got transferred to probably 4-5 different people each time on each repair. I'm even still listed in their system as an Apple Repair Tech from when I worked for the school district here at home as a Mac Technology Specialist where I called for tons of repairs. You would think with all my experience and time spent would mean something... I even had a coworker from the schools who has both the desktop and laptop certifications call Apple to find out what the deal was and it was unsuccessful. It's sad to pay almost $2700 for a laptop and have all these problems before it's even a year old with crappy customer care.
