Done the upgrade, all well.
I've noticed the little spinning wheel that used to appear when checking for new messages no longer appears. Is that part of the new mail?
The same on 3 macs.
Part of the new message system?

Yep, there' gone. I click the "get mail" button many times now and I don't know when Mail is checking for messages.

Does somebody know how to get them back?

I'm not sure if this was in Lion, but in Mail's Preferences under the General tab you can find a "Play sounds for other mail actions" checkbox. Ticking this plays a different sound if there are no new messages.

At least you get some indication that mail check has concluded.

Yes, that's always been like that. But the problem is you have to wait for the sound. When the network is slow and many accounts are being checked, it takes some seconds. It's nicer to see the spinning wheels next to each inbox.
Besides, I don't understand why they'd take it back.

With many providers supporting push mail now, it seems that they have dropped the spinning wheel for manually checking mail.

And the spinning wheels that appeared next to loading tabs in the background in safari are also gone.

Wait, so it's deliberate?!

I swear they were there when I first installed...but maybe not.

I thought there was a reason for animations, that it caused people to get less frustrated thinking something was happening.... maybe it's so fast now, people just don't?

Yes it's gone. It was replaced by a "ping" noise when it's done checking for new mail.
