I just got a new WD external drive to put some media files on. I went into disk utility just to make sure the external was working fine before I started moving things over and it told me my internal hard drive in my 08 iMac is failing! Good thing I bought the external when I did, or I would have had no idea.

very lucky! make sure you backup everything! maybe even do a time machine backup so you can restore everything the way it was?

Exactly what I'm doing right now. So glad I'm a compulsive shopper. I got a lot of my media shifted over to some external drives, now I have Time Machine running a (painfully slow) backup on just the essential stuff, sans video/pics/music. I have Apple Care, which is good since I bought it the day the 08 refresh took place (just over a year ago, right?)

This is going to suck having to use my netbook for everything for a couple weeks though :(

Should only take 3-5 business days for apple to replace the HD. Lucky you caught it now!

Really? I'm only going off Genius Bar stories I've read online. Never had a computer problem to bring to them before.

that's what they always quote me, and it's been accurate in my experience. I've certainly never had a repair take 2 weeks.

Well, good news is that I got my computer back within 3 days and everything's back up and running. Problem though is the new Seagate HD (ST3500630AS Q) they installed is LOUD. Like really loud. I've read that this particular brand of HD is particularly loud, but is there any recourse for this?
