Oh no, totally messed up

Ok, so I went to install Windows 7 on my MP 1,1.
I booted the DVD id burnt, and I get an error asking me to select a CD or something. When I switched the machine off and on again I get a GRUB error, telling me it cant find a boot device argh!

If I stick a Ubuntu live cd in the machine it boots that fine, however I also burnt 'rEFIt' which just hangs on a black screen with a cursor flashing.

I also had what I thought was a copy of 10.6, but when I turn my machine on with it in the drive nothing happens.

I totally dont know what to do now, any suggestions? Ive only got a windows keyboard for the machine so I dont know if thats no helping matters.

I would suggest getting a copy of the OS X install disk and booting with that. Also, hold down the option key when you turn you computer on (I believe that would be the 'Windows' key on a MS keyboard). That should let you pick your boot device.

You said you tried with that you thought was 10.6, so i'm guessing it wasn't an official apple disk. Just a guess.

My first thought was that you frak'd your MBR, but since GRUB loads I don't think so.

Hopefully someone will post that knows more than I do. I've had a lot of dual/triple boot systems, but they were PC and not Mac.

Is the error message something like, "Select CD-ROM Boot Type"?

If so, you need to re-burn the Windows ISO file to a new DVD. The problem is that Boot Camp has different expectations of the maximum filename length that is permitted on the burned ISO image that it is trying to boot.

Then follow the instructions here for properly creating the bootable DVD-ROM. The example is for Windows Server 2008, but it works for any version of Windows.

just fyi, the option key to select what drive to boot from is still the option key on windows keyboards (aka the alt key) the key moves physically but the software still recognizes that its the alt key.

as for installing windows 7 im guessing you're using a 64 bit version? as far as i know the 32 should work fine, but the 64 has issues which have to be addressed (which is i think the link someone else posted in here)
