This is bad. Google is copying Apple and in a controversial move they have pulled all the emulators from the Android Market and worst they deleted the developers accounts!

http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/29/android-markets-most-popular-emulators-disappear-without-a-trac/

We should write Google and express our disatisfaction whit their actions before they become another Apple. It does not matter if you use ios or Android, smarphone users should join forces and write google.

First, this post is totally irrelevant to the iphone. Second, you don't even know what you're talking about. The emulators that were pulled were also pulled because the "developers" were using open source code and then selling it as their own.

I have a hard time caring about developers making money off of someone else's open sourced code. Sorry.

You may get a different response in an android forum though, I like how restrictive Apple is - at least I know I'm getting quality.

This. Sounds like the guy put some effort into these applications but at their base emulators are just applications on which to play pirated code. Honestly, if this guy had been giving these away and doing the coding in his spare time I'd feel worse for him. As it is he still got to make money and it doesn't sound like Sega is going to go after him in court.

A curated app store you say? Is that open?

Curated? How so?

If they were taken down to open source licence violations (just like VLC Player, do you remember?) then Google are well within their right to do this.

This has nothing to do with the iPhone. It would be suitable for you to post this in some other android forum.

LOL does the OP even know he posted in an iPhone forum. Generally speaking most of us could care less about how google manages their app store

This site is open to Android discussion. Nothing wrong with posting here.

It may be open, but as you see by nearly all the respondents it has a decidedly iPhone slant. Not surprising since it is an iPhone forum.

You'll get more discussion on an android forum.

Consider the alternative, Do people post iOS stuff on android forums? Not really

You want to talk about android you'll be better off on an android forum.

Just because you can doesn't mean you'll get a good discussion going.

this is bad, emulators were a good part of android, i was even going to get an android phone, maybe its time to experience windows phone then.

At least jailbreaking still allows for emulators on iOS devices :D

Yet another completely irrelevant Android thread in the iPhone forum. Reported to mods but it is still here...

I was reading other stories on this. I think the dev got nailed for trademark issues and so all his stuff got pulled. Emulators themselves are legal as much as Sony Nintendo and MS hate them. Roms are not legal but the emulators are and they have lost court cases to prove that fact.

Sony got smart and started going after them with trademark attacks. The PSX*something* got nail because it violated Sony's PSX trademark. Google had to pull them and deleted the guys account due to trademark issues.

On top of that the guy violated the open source licencing of the code he was using by not releasing his source code for any add ons he did. Again a way Sony and others went after him and nailed him on that.
With that list of things he did wrong Google was force to pull it.

I understand what you're saying, but it's a moot point since the ROMs (the only product an emulator can consume) are 100% illegal.

Not entirely true.

Some companies have released their "ROMs" as freeware (I believe Irem did with their r-type Amiga disk images) and some platforms have almost their whole back catalogue available for free (see http://worldofspectrum.org/)

Then there are homebrew games made into roms and the whole demoscene thing with demos coded for older consoles released as rom images.

Not all Emulation is illegal.

I know a few people who will be annoyed by this. It may even wipe their smug android smiles off their faces when they mention that iPhones are locked down and 'useless' whenever I use mine.

These emulator apps will still be available outside the android market place won't they though?
