Oh the Horrors!

My parents gave me a graduation/birthday present of a Macbook. Personally, I really wanted to wait until the end of the summer and kind of told them that, but atleast they got me a Mac instead of a Dell. Pretty cool.

However, I now realize how horrible this is!

For one, they got me the Circuit City protection plan. I don't know how well it rates to AppleCare. I'll see.

Now, I have to spend my own money to buy:
-bestskinsever skin
-some bag to carry this thing in
-KVM switch
-DVI to VGA adaptor
-wireless internet stuff


They did however, get me a 250 gig harddive, external.

I cannot get the internet working on it though. I take the plug out of my PC and hook it into the Macbook and fill in all of the right LAN settings, and it says it cannot connect to the network. Ideally, I want to plug another cable into it, but I don't know what IP address I could assign to it, and my dad probably won't be too willing ot help. He's the computer genius. People think I'm good too, but I just like to mess around and have a good memory. Any help here?

If you want to chime in on a good, CHEAP bag, feel free. I mean, like, a $40 bag Or perhaps, a sleeve would be best? I want a way to carry it that will nto let it get hurt. I'll have the BSE for scratch protection, now I want whatever other kind of drop/rough protection I can, for very cheap.

I also need to find the best way to move data over. 80 gig HD, but I only have about 60 left? WTF? I have maybe 20 gigs of music alone!! But, I have alot of photos, word files, etc. I also need to put on programs like open office. To boot, I have a good bit of homework I should probably be doign instead.

It's not that I don't want it, it's that now I am going to have to spend more money to have it "ready to go" It's a small cloud and a HUGE silver lining! Also, I really wanted to wait until after some of the updates, because I don't need it right now. But, if I have it, I'll be using it! I just have to get this durn' internet to work. After an hour of troubleshooting, my dad thinks it has something to do with the DNS #'s and we'll keep working on it tomorrow night.


Slick machine, but I want to get a BSE skin on it before I do anything, I'm so scared to scratch it! And, getting used to the different OS will be...eh, interesting. My dad hated that I hadn't set it up to have a tap on the pad= a click. He kept getting frustrated but owuldn't let me fix it. I'll get a KVM so I can have it run on my existing stuff at home.

Do you need to fill in LAN settings? If you're using this on a regular home network, you should have a DHCP server running on your router that will do this for you.

Also, you should be able to get the settings out of your PC.

Our home network runs on a machine that is really old. My dad has it set up some nifty way so he can use the same IP here as he does at work, so his computer doesn't balk at switching all the time. We are NOT using DHCP. Infact, the network setup thing wasn't connecting because it was not trying to use the static IP that I'd put it, it was trying to use the DHCP. The network setup thing seems like trash. I used the actualy network settings thing to manually configure all of the settings and it's all good, everything is right. It can see the print server, and it can talk to our home network computer/server. It shows me as being connected in the network properties box thing....but it refuses to connect to the internet. I'm not much of a guru, so I understand somewhat but not fully.

The updates aren't that big a deal. Santa Rosa seems to be minor; it's not even a faster processor. The better graphics card is a nice addition though. Don't complain, my MacBook absolutely rules.

Go for 2 GB of RAM though. You can get a 1 GB stick for $60 off of newegg. You don't have to upgrade immediately, but look for it in the future.

Delete the Microsoft Office trial, it should save some space. Though if you buy the actual Office, that'll take it up again.

i set my network connections to automatic and it usually works itself out

to get rid of the extra HD space you will need to trim down the media from iLife

If you don't see yourself using your Mac for music production, get rid of the loops and virtual instruments from Garageband.

If you don't want all the templates and crap from iDVD, trash that too

Trash the iWork demo in your apps folder.

Just search for these things and drag em to the trash. The loops are in an application support>garageband folder

the instruments are in an application support>garageband>samples or instruments or something like that.

You can also trash the printer drivers if you don't want em. Epson and Canon ones are pretty big.

that should get you way over 5 gigs back. at least. Also download whatsize to check what's where and how big stuff is.

don't worry about the scratches, I use a booq vyper it's pretty cool i guess.

Spend some time on these boards, and you'll get all the info you need about OS X

Eh, our system doesn't like me I suppose. For what it is worth, EVERY time I replace something on my windows machine, I go through the same thing But, the Mac looks sexy.


I might try to get that 5 gigs back. I have iWork 06 to put on it. I will work with some of that music stuff, but I don't know if I'll work with garageband. With the 250 gigs of backup, I'm not too concerned, I suppose.

And I'm really only concerned about the new OS, which I guess I'll have to pay for?


Any simple way to hijack my school's wireless? I don't know what form of protection they use or anything, but it's got a password and no one knows it. I even teach there and they haven't told me. I'd love to find a simple way to get the password, just to know I can I have 3 weeks of school left, it's not like I have any need to. Except, there are a few events where I'll be there for a long long time, those times would be nice to have internet.

I wish I had $50....

I work at a screenprinting place. Maybe 10 hours a week during school, 40-60 hours a week during summer. I also work about 5 hours a week organizing festivals and events around the country. I'd work more, but I don't need to, most of what I'm doing is making calls for another guy. I also work for my school, teaching a production tech class, and I do freelance photography, videography and production work for a variety of people. I work my butt off, pretty much, and this was a combined birthday and HS graduation gift. It's not like I routinely get huge gifts from my parents. Just so you know, I bought my own car with cash, and I pay for my own gas. I'll be buying all of these little things I need to get the computer ready for hardcore usage, not my parents. And I've worn the same pair of shoes, some Fallen skate shoes, for about a year and a half, thank you very much!
