Oiling Mac Pro 4,1/5,1 single CPU BOOSTA fan?

Hi,

I recently purchased a dual CPU tray for my single CPU 4,1, which is running a w3690. I've always thought that it was noisier than my beloved 2008 Mac Pro, but thought I was imagining it.

I was surprised to hear/find that the dual CPU board fans were actually quieter - very quiet. Unfortunately I think the dual CPU board is faulty (kernel panics, random restarts), but it made me wish that the single CPU BOOSTA fan was quieter (until I can find a new dual CPU tray/new dual CPU computer).

Is there a relatively simple way to oil this fan?

The noise from the single CPU is not really a huge bother or anything, but if it could be as quiet as the dual CPU board, that would be great.

Mine BOOSTA fan is really quiet. What RPM you have at idle and full load?
I'm asking because if you have improperly installed heatsink you will got high RPM

Hi,

My fan is at normal speed, it's 855/856 and rarely moves from this even under full load as the CPU temps are very cool - it's just got a slightly more annoying drone/tone than the dual CPU heatsink fans, which have a much more silent 'whoosh' sound. It's been running fine and cool for years now.

Most people wouldn't notice, but I have a studio and the computer is actually in the room, so it's a bit more of a sensitive environment. But again, I'm sure it's 'within noise specs', just wish it was as quiet as the (faulty) dual cpu board and hoped some oil would do it.

You may try SMCfancontrol to increase the fan speed a bit. Sometimes that particular RPM cause specific noise due to vibration, beat frequency, resonance, etc. e.g. You may try 900 RPM and see if the noise changed.

Also, make an extra 100 RPM on the intake fan sometimes can also help. If both intake and exhaust fan run at same RPM, the chance of having beat frequesncy will be greatly increased.

P.S. I would NOT recommend MacsFanControl on this case, SMCFanControl is a better tool to increase fan speed. But if you want to reduce fan speed, or lock the fan RPM, then MacsFanControl is the way to go.
