my SE is a backup device so doesn’t really matter if its not flawless but i dont want a massive battery drain device considering 12.1 has been good to me

i think this is a thread worth creating specifically because SE is getting long in the tooth being an early 2016 device On A9.

thanks

and no, i dont think ‘just try it out’ is great advice - i cannot go back to 12.1 if i want to , if i have regrets

fwiw im really enjoying iPadOS (iOS 13) on my iPad Pro 2017, but its got a lot more horsepower, isn’t as dated, and has a lot of battery capacity overhead even if there was battery drain - it seems its been good to me so far with general lack of bugs, performance, and battery life

I have no experience with iOS 13 on my XR, my daily driver, because its jail broken and battery is glorious and I’m gonna likely ride it out

SE handles iOS13 just fine. Biggest improvement for me is the Maps app. I don't like the fact that Apple won't update it for the previous version but they've been doing that for a long time. If it was a primary phone I would update, but as a backup phone you can just leave it.

I honestly think the 5S can handle iOS13 just fine, Apple just want people to buy their new phones.

I updated my iPhone SE to iOS 13 yesterday and it went smoothly and is running just fine with no hiccups whatsoever. With all the various updates I have ever done I have never had a problem or experienced any battery drain issues etc. I guess some people are just unlucky?

My SE has been running great on the new OS. Just remember to give it 48hrs to settle after updating it before thinking battery life etc is poor. It will sort itself out.

I put my SE on 13.3 upon release and it is fine. Granted, I am using my Samsung Galaxy S10e as my primary phone but the SE is doing ok as a secondary device.

Definitely upgrade. If you don’t, at least upgrade to 12.4 to get the important security update, your phone is currently vulnerable.

If your backup SE will be restored using your primary’s backup when it’s put to use then you would want both devices to be running the version of iOS

I'm in similar situation, using iPhone 8 on iOS 12 and it works fine. I like that it works the same as my iPad Air which works fine on iOS 12 where it's dead-ended. Debating whether to update the iPhone 8 to iOS 13.

What happens to users who leave their iPhone on iOS 12 for another couple of years to the time when iOS 14 is out? At some point does it become not allowed to update a hardware-capable device from iOS 12 to iOS 13 (or 14)?

No problems on my SE. No major difference in battery life compared to iOS 12.

A9 is nowhere near being long in the tooth, OP. I bet with proper optimization it could still handle iOS ****ing 20 with no hiccups if Apple let it. Obviously not gonna happen because sales.

It can take a couple of major update before you won't be able to update OTA anymore but if its happen, you'll have to update via iTunes (of finder in Catalina) if you want to update.

For the debate to update or not, I say if nothing interest you in iOS 13, just stay on 12. I learned over the years that if a version works well, I'll stay there until another version works at least the same or better. Thats why I always have a spare device on the beta program.

I don't know how to answer your poll. Is it yes to stay at 12 or yes to go to 13, I can't tell.
But two SE running 13 here perfectly.
