Here's the deal,

I've got a 1.gen 8 GB iPhone, bought as an 1.1.4 OTB, hacked and unkocked only with Dev.Team Software.

- updated to 2.0 with pwnage tool. Created a custum ipsw, and my phone was unlocked.

- updated to 2.0.1 when the appropriate pwnage tool was released, but I never had to use the tool, as my iPhone was still unlocked. Fair enough some people said that Apple, didn't mess with the bootloaders for 1.gen iPhones

- now came the 2.1 and iTunes 8. And yesterday the new tool was released, I updated the iPhone, synced, and the phone still works, and is still unlocked, syncing fine with iTunes 8.

So what's going on? I have only pwned my phone once, with the first tool for 2.0, and it has updated twice and still works. Mail, youtube, mail, everything just works. I'm confused.

Let's put it this way, first gen is a thing of past and Apple doesn't care about it anymore.

As long as you JB with the update baseband option unchecked, your unlocked baseband stays on the phone. As long as the older baseband is compatible with the newer firmware, you stay unlocked and all is well outside AT&TLand.

Right, so it isn't necessarily permanent -- right? If Apple releases an update that re-does the baseband, then it will get locked again. But for now, pleasantly, it stays unlocked and you can use the updates straight from Apple as long as you don't need jailbreak apps. :)

So if I just plug in my unlocked/jailbroken 1st Gen iPhone, and update to 2.1 directly from iTunes 8, it won´t block? I won´t have to unlocked it again??
I´m running the latest firmwire before 2.1

Another question, how good to the 3Gs work with that sim unlock system? Does the 3G work on any other carrier that provides 3G services???

There are so many adds in craiglist offering unlocked 3G phones, that´s why I´m asking..

1) If you're running an iPhone with EDGE that you unlocked using Pwnage on any 2.x firmware, yes, it will remain unlocked if you do the firmware update directly from iTunes. It will not remain Jailbreaked unless you use Pwnage to create a new IPSW or you use QuickPwn to re-jailbreak it after you update it.

2) There is no publicly available way to SIM unlock an iPhone 3G at this time. There are a small number of SIM unlocked iPhone 3G's available, I believe, because they were sold in countries that legally require this of cell service providers. But otherwise these ads are mosty scams, knock-offs, misleading advertising, etc.

Yes I´m running an iPhone with EDGE, I don´t know what was used to unlocked, I bought it like this, a week ago. But I assume Pwnage since it has SW version 2.0.2 and it has Cydia and everything works fine. And when you turn it on, the bitten pineapple appears

Can you explain me what I need to do, before or during de update? to 2.1? so I don´t screw up.

I found this tutorial, but I don´t know if I need to do all of whats explain there, or not

Here is the tutorial Iclarified

Correct. You can flash over an unlocked baseband with a newer locked one. It only gets tricky with trying to downgrade.

Yes, it should have been Pwnage.

You have three options:

1) You want the phone unlocked but you don't need Jailbreak apps (the ones you install with Cydia or Installer). Then just sync your iPhone so that you have a current backup (just in case), then update iTunes to 8 if you haven't already, and plug the iPhone in. If you don't automatically get a prompt to update it, click on the Check Now button in iTunes to look for the 2.1 firmware and follow the prompts to install it. That's it. At the end of installation, your Cydia stuff will be gone (I think?) but all your App Store Apps and your settings, e-mail, music, etc, will still be there.

2) You want the phone unlocked and you want to continue using jailbreak. You should download the newest Pwnage, use the guide to create a pwned 2.1 firmware file, and install it on the phone.

3) You want the phone unlocked and you're not sure about jailbreaking. You can follow procedure (1), and if you decide you want j/b later, you can download QuickPwn and use it to jailbreak the phone without reinstalling.
